The more populated Easthampton gets the more wildlife is encroaching and trying to take back what's their's in the first place! Last night a bear took down my bird feeders Yikes. Found tracks and fresh bear shit with MY bird seeds in in!.
My son & I set it back up and also rigged a EWS (early warning system) of sorts. But I'm thinking...what the heck are we going to do about it anyway! I mean, you can't very well fire off my son's .450 Marlin at 2 am in town here! Laughing1 That would get their attention!!!! And I'd be asking you guys for bail money besides!
First computer problems...now bear problems...where does it end???

yikes cant help you there. sry.. good luck
Probably safer to just get rid of the bird feeders so you don't attract the bears at all? I live in Everett... Big brown creatures here are NOT bears Wink1

Cresti...Keep your eyes open. If he continues to be a nusance I would gladly come down there during the second bear season with my bow and take care of the issue. I still have a tag for this year.
Just let me know!!! Bear jerky is really good.

I don't know if this will fly in MA but a friend of mine was having problems with a Bear in Maine and he called the EP's and they told him to take a bucket fill it with bleach and coat the outside in Peanut Butter the bear will come and lick the Peanut butter and then drink the bleach....It won't kill or wound them but it will give them serious enough tummy ache to not come back...Like i said this wouldn't be my way of taking care of the situation but it was suggested to him by an Officer of the Law....so its somethign to look into.

its not recommended to make jerky out of of bear meat the smoker doesn't get hot enough to kill the parasites FYI

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. However, my son is an avid bow hunter and is more than capable of taking down the bear; the problem lies in where I live. Very residential with a lot of close houses in my neighborhood. Not so sure it would wise - or even possible - to track a wounded bear thru all the neighbor's back yards. Besides that, it'd be against the law and not something you can easily hide doing!
Here's a present it left for me:

Cresty, buy your Neighbor a bird feeder for HIS or HER YARD, and just ask that he put it where you can both see it [in his yard]. Laughing1 Laughing1 Laughing1

No food, no bear problems. No food, no squirrel problems. Wild birds do not need supplemental food during the warm months. By putting food out during this time you are dumbing down the birds, acclimating bears to human contact and bringing rodents (tree rats) in to the area of your home.
Stop the selfish act of feeding the birds so you can "enjoy" watching them during the summer months and so will end your problems.
BIRD FEEDERS IN THE SUMMER = NEGATIVE WILDLIFE INTERACTIONS
Nothing personal Cresty, just got to call them the way I see 'em.

I have an electric smoker...it gets plenty hot enough. All the jerky does is give you some really good gas. But if you ask my wife, water gives me gas LOL. I am sure seabass has the same problem!

It is indeed selfish to feed these birds during the summer months. They don't need it and you may actually be stunting their natural instincts by doing so. You are not doing it to help them, you are doing it for the sole purpose of your own viewing enjoyment.
Don't want to call it selfish ? Then call it myopic because you cant see past the ramifications of your actions.
Again, aint nothing personal, but I feel strongly on this subject and you will find that almost all wild life biologist will agree with this viewpoint.

Agree1 , a worse problem in my area of the state is the people who show up in their cars and empty out their trunks with moldy bread, grains, absolutely everything etc. to feed the waterfowl i.e. ducks, geese, swans, pidgeons, seagulls, it has become such a problem that there is more bird shit in the water than there is waterYuck1
AND THE WORST PART IS THAT THERE ARE SIGNS UP EVERYWHERE THAT IT IS ILLEGAL TO FEED THE WATERFOWL BUT PEOPLE DON'T GIVE A SHEET AS LONG AS THEY CAN SEE ''THEIR BIRDS '' GET 3 TIMES FATTER THAN A SUMO WRESTLER AND CREATE HUGE AMOUNTS OF POOP IN AND AROUND THE WATER THUS RUINING FISHERIESMad1Mad1Mad1

Wow. All I can say is wow. Quite a variety of posts on poor Cresty's bird feeder problems. I live in the same town and I've lost count of how many bears I've seen. My wife was sitting in a lawn chair reading a book last July and had one walk up to within 10 feet. It had a big radio collar on it. It wandered off then she went in and changed her shorts! Bottom line is I quit feeding the birds in the summer. I put them out first of November, then I take them in first of April. And yes, I'm selfish, I like seeing the birds. I also chase raccoons out of my shed, shoo skunks out of my garage (politely) and I let my cat kill red squirrels and chipmunks. If I'm stunting the growth of a chickadee, I apologize, but in the grand scheme of things... I ain't stressin over it. Good luck Cresty.
