Allright I know this is MA site but as some of you know i now reside in Maryland and the Deer Season opened on Monday and i figured i'd post a quick report for you guys that are itching to get out and hunt. Well first off when i came down here i was struggling for a place to hunt, either everything is private and since i don't know anyone down here i can't get permission, or it is public and gets pounded and was told by locals its pretty much not safe. So when i was cruising around bass pro's on my normal saturday routine i ran into some guys from the "Meade National Heritage Association. The association is a club that owns 12,000 acres of land that used to be part of Ft Meade. It is all federeal managed as a wildlife study for the gov't. I payed 60 bucks and joined up. It has a bow range shotgun range and muzzleloader range and you have to qualify before each season. The 12,000 acres is divided up into different tracts example: A-Z and when you enter the refuge area you give your membership card to the Hunter Control and pick which tract of land you want to hunt. Monday i got there at 9 after my flight from MA got in (home for the weekend my buddy is getting married and i had to attend the engagement party) Went out for like 3 hrs until i was interupted by some wildlife people from the smithsonian trying to catch birds. I went out wednesday night sat in the stand for 4 hrs and saw two foxes however as i got to my truck at dark i was greeted by four does jumping the road in front of me. Tonight i went to a new area and not even 50yds in to the woods i jumped a doe who ran 50yds and then decided to watch me for a bout a 1 min or 2 and then took off so i headed further in and set up my climber in some hardwoords on the edge of some thick laurel and began to sit. After about 1 1/2hrs i had doe come in 35yds away at my feeding parrelel to my 90 degrees no shooting lane so she came and passed. About 1 hr later i had another doe come in to my left ,she hung up behind some trees at 29 yds she stepped out into a small clearing and i let one fly but underbrush got the best of me not ten yards from my stand i clipped a branch and it sent my arrow haywire. She wasn't phased at all and continued to eat acorns I watched her for about another 15mins but the thick trees i used to block my silohette from the sides and from the back blocked any possible shooting lane i would have had. Good spot though headin back there tommorow night 3 deer in 4 hrs not to bad. By the way down here im allowed to take 2 does and 1 buck per season. So get ready guys the MA season is fast approaching. PS it is very nice to hunt deer in 75 80 degree weather definately don't get cold up there in the stand....Sorry bout the rant but had to get it out.
