I have a growing population of black squirrels in my area, they are actually grey squirrels with a melanin problem. Just like there are albinos for every species there is also black or too much melanin.
My question is this, are there any of these squirrels out west? Anyone else seen these?

There are more black squirrels here in Westfield than there are grey! They were introduced into Stanley Park quite a few years ago and have just exploded! It's kinda funny when an "Out of Towner" sees one for the first time, they think they're rats with big fluffy tailsGrinning1

I had never seen one in Franklin County untill a few years ago. Now, there is one street here in Greenfield that has had a steady population, but I never see them any where else in the County. Notsure

Thanks for the replies, thats good to know, i was hoping they were rare but sounds like they are spreading everywhere. I notice they are more aggressive than greys too, when blacky shows up the greys run or get beat on.

Hey SD last year we were looking at colleges for our son. We visited Stonehill, more out your way. They have a population of white true albino squirrels. We didn't see any but the college community is pretty proud & protective of them. Son's decided not to go there so I guess we'll never see them, unless we make a pass through on the way to or back from Bass Pro Shop! As you heard above quite a few black squirrels out this way. I haven't seen to many in Belchertown, mostly gray & reds with an occasional black squirrels.

They were originally brought here from England by the owner of Stanley Brush co. and released in Stanley Park in Westfield and have spread all over from there.

I could be wrong but............ I think it is a natural occuring pheno in the gene pool. When I lived in Auburn Ind. there were more blacks than grays. I seriously doubt that they made there way out to Indiana from Westfield. But, I've been wrong before Grinning1
