well. i have a 14ft canoe and the weight limit is 680 lbs, so i would say you are good for a few hundred.

Always keep your feet straight out in front of you, bring a large sponge to bail excess water with, NEVER stand up. Those are the basics. A good general philosophy is less is better. Try to widdle down what you take. One small box of tackle and a small back pack or dry bag for sundries etc. is sufficient. Also, dress and pack to get wet. It will happen eventually, one way or another.

I always stand up in my canoe. Usually me and a friend are standing the entire time, and even operating the trolling motor while standing. I have never even really had any close encounters to capsizing. Maybe though its because my canoe is a 14 footer, but it is one of those handcrafted indian logo sportspals, so it is about 4 feet wide.Notsure

Notsure first time with a canoe....expect to flip so dont bring anything valuable until u get the balance down...a 10 - 12 ft canoe is gonna be tippy!Beerchug

i would at least have your electronics in a FLOATING dry bag. i persoanally stand up all the time when i'm in my canoe (16 foot aluminum) but only with 2 people and a lot of heavy gear. this puts more boat in the water and seams to help keep me much stabler.

ironically, the only time i've ever flipped, i was sitting!
