Question...

...What are some summer time tricks for Brown Trout and Salmon?

I have recently been making frequent trips to Mattawa Lake in Orange to try and catch a big Brown or Salmon. I have not even triggered a bite. I have mostly tried night crawlers in deep water (30-40 feet). Smashhead

Any tips would be helpful because I know they are in there!!!Fishing1 Fishing1 Fishing1 Fishing1 Fishing1 Fishing1 Fishing1 Fishing1 Fishing1 Fishing1

I don't know the specifics of that lake. But usually the salmon are held up around 20 to 40 feet of water due to the cooler water around this time of year. Surface temps on the majority of lakes have got to be in the seventies so that will push the cold water species deeper. Give it a try?

Average depth is 17' with a max depth of 40'. Here is a link to a map (not to scale) of Lake Mattawa!

I'm heading up to Maine this weekend and will also be trying for some Salmon and Togue. This time of year they start to go to move down to the cooler depths. The lake I am fishing (Wassokeag)has a max depth of about 85 feet and the fish this time of year should be around the 50-60foot depth. Helps to have a fish finder. I primarily use smelt as bait. If I don't have smelt I'll tie on some hardware. I've had success with Mooselucks and a lure called the speedy shiner made I think by Thompson. We'll usually fish with lead core line or a down rigger.

Good luck fishing Mattawa. Never been there. Let us know how you do.
