SIDNEY, NE - Cabela's Incorporated (NYSE: CAB), the World's Foremost Outfitter® of hunting, fishing and outdoor gear, announced today it is in negotiations to build one of its huge destination superstores on a portion of a 624-acre mixed-use development at historic Rentschler Field in East Hartford, Connecticut.

The Connecticut store would be similar in size to the Cabela's retail stores in Kansas City, Kansas and Buda, Texas. Cabela's anticipates the store would be open by fall of 2007.
"We know that we have a lot of great customers in Connecticut and throughout the entire region, and we're excited about the possibility of a store in East Hartford," said Dennis Highby, President and CEO of Cabela's Inc. "Spending time outdoors hunting, fishing, hiking and camping is a big part of the history and culture of Connecticut and the northeast, and we know that we will complement and benefit the community."
Highby also noted that East Hartford in particular is an ideal location for a Cabela's destination superstore. "We are excited about the possibility of bringing our world-famous retail experience to our great customers who live in central Connecticut, as well as to the thousands of hunters, anglers and other visitors who travel through the area every year. East Hartford is a dynamic, fast-growing city and combines the best of New England tradition, history and culture with modern shopping and entertainment. We believe a Cabela's store will be the perfect fit for East Hartford and all of Connecticut."
To operate a new store of this size, Cabela's expects to employ as many as 450 people from East Hartford and the surrounding area, who would join the Cabela's family of employees famous for their excellent customer service, outdoor lifestyle and intimate knowledge of outdoor products. Product offerings would include hunting, fishing, camping, hiking, boating and wildlife watching gear, as well as outdoor clothing and outdoors-styled gifts and furnishings.
Cabela's currently has 12 retail locations. The newest, a 185,000-square-foot facility in Buda, Texas, opened in June of 2005. Seven additional new stores have been announced by Cabela's in the past year. Currently under construction are a 150,000-square-foot store in Lehi, Utah, opening in August, 2005, and a 185,000-square-foot store in Rogers, Minn., expected to open in October, 2005. Cabela's also has announced plans to open stores in Gonzales, La., and Glendale, Ariz., in 2006; and Reno, Nev., Wheat Ridge, Colo., and East Rutherford, N.J., in 2007.
"With the amazing outdoor recreation and sporting opportunities in Connecticut and the northeastern United States, East Hartford would be an ideal location," said Highby. "The Cabela's retail experience would complement the many, varied outdoor adventures the region has to offer."
A Connecticut store would be built in Cabela's trademark style that evokes the feeling of the outdoors. Cabela's stores are known as top-notch educational and entertainment attractions, mixing a décor of museum-quality animal displays with colorful dioramas, huge aquariums stocked with native fish and a centerpiece indoor mountain displaying trophy animals interacting in realistic re-creations of their natural habitats.
Extraordinary in design and showcasing thousands of products from Cabela's world-famous catalog, the stores are known as shopping and tourism destinations, drawing customers not only from the local area, but also from hundreds of miles away. Many traveling sportsmen and women are also attracted by the familiar Cabela's script logo and the Company's world-famous reputation for quality merchandise, value and extraordinary customer service.

Features which greet visitors to a Cabela's store include:

I just read today that they maybe having problems with some town officials/permits due to road improvements that are needed before ground breaking. Also since this development Cabelas began talking with officials in Plainfield Ma, and are thinking about putting a store off of route 1. I would rather see this store in East Hartford a thirty minute drive compared to a hour or so depending upon route 1 traffic is a better idea it think. I hope the officials in East Hartford don't let this slip away this would be a major loss if they did.

Besides the local tackle shops this seem like a win win situation. Ive bought some stuff from cabelas before and would love to actually visit a store and look around. I know Bass Pro shops have more fishing stuff but I like looking at truck accessroies the whole deal. This is a good thing in my eyes for the city of Hartford. We'll see if this project gets devloped though.
