View Full Version : Favorite lure/bait to use
If you could only use one bait or lure to go fishing with what would it be?
For me I would have to say Rapala lures since Ive had great success with them.
For atrificial I would second the Rapala.....especially a split tail....sliver in color.
For live bait I don't think anything can beat a live shiner if your fishing for a game fish like bass, pickeral, pike etc.
For all around fishing for anthing nothingk, repeat nothing beats a plain old worm.

i love green pumpkin senkos always do well with them. and nothing like a buzz bait over some lillys. love to see that bass attack it. lots of misses but its still fun even when that happens.

Trout: Thomas Bouyant silver black and red dots
Bass: Jig and pig rubber worms, and crank baits
Pike: Sluggos, Spinner Baits, Large crank baits
Pickerl: Same as pike
Blues: Anything in the box will do
Stripers: Tube and worm, Mambo Minnows, Knucklehead topwater, Large Sluggos, and a couple of secrets

I am very fond of small plastics and the drop-shot. Today with all the fishing pressure, you have to target small pods of your target species and work them intensely. The small plastics on a drop-shot fit the bill just fine. And I'm finding the drop-shot even works well in lily pads with a bit beefier set-up.
DROP SHOT? Haven't heard that term. Similiar to Carolina or Texas rig?

I thought everyone knew about the drop shot rig. It's a killer on deep water bass....largemouth or smallmouth. It's a finesse technique which started on the tournament trail in CA about 5 years ago and works magic on our waters, especially the Quabbin. Rig a size 2 RED octopus hook on 4# test floro-carbon using a palomar knot. Leave a LONG tag (about 2') and tie a 1/4 oz. STEEL bell-type sinker. Lightly nose hook a 4" thin finesse worm. Lower the rig along the side of your boat over a 15' - 25' hump. When the sinker hits the bottom, snug up the line to make sure the worm is dangling 2' above the bottom. Lower your rod tip slightly and just "shiver" it. All of a sudden you will feel a tightness. Do NOT "set" the hook! Just start reeling and the octopus will set itself. Hang on!

Any bait shop that has a good selection will have them. They are made by Gary Yamamoto. Go to dicks sporting goods, they have everything.

You don't have to go with the Gary Yamamoto Senkos, as there are many "knock offs" out there that are just as good and a heck of a lot cheaper.
Bass can't lays off the punkinseed or watermelon colors. When in doubt throw a senko on a weedless setup and bounce it off the bottom.

Before I started fly fishing I always carried a selection of Roostertails in assorted colors. Usually a blue or brown worked best but sometimes they wanted something different. Now I carry an assortment of wooly buggers in every color but the olive/black works best.

Like said before you cant beat a Rapala, there are all kinds of different ones for different conditions, structure, and depths. Another bait that I have had huge success with this spring is the Jig and Pig, Prohably one of my favoritesBeerchug

When fishing in the evening or early morning (low light to no light) my favorite is a 5/8 oz black Jitterbug. Over the years I have probably caught more bass on a rapala than anything else but my biggest bass have come on the jitterbug. Nothing beats a top water slam for getting your heart beating!
