here we go, i just deleted this story twice while i was typin itBash1 Smashhead Smashhead

so friday night we go and get 4 birds roosted 300 yards from the truck, saturday morning we are there at 415am. My dad sits 30 yards behind me, im on the edge of the road about 10-15 yards from the retention pond.I see the first jake wake up, he starts streching out and stuff, then the other jake, then the tom wakes up and gobbles. A hen answers, let me tell you, i didnt think hens were that loud, this thing was REALLY loud. so the gobblers still in the tree gobbling, then the first jake flys down at about 445-500am, then the 2nd jake, then the third, then the gobbler.! im ready for this, i was shaking sooo much. so after about 10 more minutes of gobbling on the ground i can hear him getting a little closer, i cant see him b/c of the mound of dirt, then i see the ducks fly out of the retention pond, so i knew they were close. im ready, gun up pointin the way i think they are gunna come out, i was right. here comes the tom, all i see is about his bear up, at about 10 yards, BOOM he falls over then flys away, i get up, the other jake flys away, then the other jake pops his head over the hill, he sees me and starts to run BOOM, BOOM. i missed him clean, i go over and there are tons of feathers where i shot the tom, the Shotgun wad was even there, but no bird, for the next hour we look, but cant find anybird. we looked under everybrush pile, everythick thing, i was really angry with myself.

I have heard of this happening many of times. If you don't get a good clean head shot then you can forget about it! Them feathers are tough and thick! Were you using a Turkey choke? I have a super full turkey choke on a Remington 870. And I am shooting a new remington load this year that has a cone behind the wad...it keeps a tighter pattern farther away than normal. I shot this load with the choke before the season and it was keeping a group the size of my fist at 35 yards!!!! Better luck next year!

i was using 20 gauge 870, rem loads with a turkey choke. Me and my dad will probably get mossburgs. thats 2 turkeys we have not gotten. my dad missed a tom low last year at 35 yards. Ill set mine up with a red dot scope, and then ill get a nice clean kill if im lucky again next year. Also we are going up to maine, everyone says its easy turkey hunting up there, because there are so many.

Buckmanjr .....the only reason we make fun of you is that you make it SOOOOOO easy for us to ....j/k pal,...... imagine the stories that tom is telling his friends today !!!!

I have a red dot on my 870... I swear by it for turkey and deer. The only thing you need to get used to is keeping both eyes open while using it. Not like a typical scope!

ya, i have shot with red dots, kurt, i honesty think that turkey must have crawled up under something and died. Its to bad having him go to waste, but how could he survive a shot from ten yards, the wad even hit him!

To bad there Buckjr. I am sure you'll get another crack at those birds. Better luck next time.
