Went down to Bass Pro (again) Today. I needed to replace my old Marlin 22lr tube feed (19 years old and showin it) for a better varmit shooter. So I went with a Savage 17HMR . None in stock Cry1 only the display that I passed on, had some dings and stuff on the stock. It has the Hardwood stock and Matching B.S.A 3/12 scope made for the gun. I know the rounds are $ compared to the 22lr but is really fast with the Hornady Rounds. 3,500fps? An 177 air gun pellet at that speed would kill all kinds of stuff. And thats a good thing. Chill1 Any of you guys shoot this gun or round? It is on order from a sight in KY. I have a 223 and 204 for preds just thought this was a good gun for the value for a small gun. X

I have that same gun you were looking at Bass Pro. A real fast moving and great knock down power shell. A real tack driver at 150 yds and beyond.Wink1

I own that same gun.I'ts diffinitley a tack driver.personally i'ts only good for the same type off game you would ues you'r 22 mag on. i'v had head shots on yotes at a 100 yards and had to track them another 100 yards to find them. It's a nice fun gun.If your looking for a small cal. for varment's up to the size of yotes i'd be looking at a 22 hornet never had anything that i hit with the hornet walk away.

Yote. could not agree more about the swift or a 22mag 22/250 type cartrige. More take down. 223 45grain is similar and pretty flat @ 150. Have never shot or owed a 17 cal. hmr. I was just wondering what i was getting into with this rifle. I know what I can take with what I have. But Can I harvest a yote or big silver fox with this little round?
I'm one of those guys who likes to under caliber as long as the job gets done. No lost animals.

Replace the 22 with another one. Use the 223 for the varmints. Match bullet weight/ configuration for the game, and enjoy.

As you already know a well placed shot from any cal. weapon will take down your critter.Like i said a well placed HEAD shot from a 17 will work on yotes and fox's.If you haven't bought it yet i would really look into a (22 HORNET ) it's not much louder than the 17 but in my book is 10 times better than the 17 and if your into reloading like i am the 22 hornet is the way to go.

I shoot the .17 Savage also. At 100 yards it will keep rounds in a nickle size group. I did a possum with it @ 40 yards and the hole it put in that animal was unreal. Tiny bullet that just explodes on impact. Another plus was no pass through. Possum was dead before he hit the gound. Plus the gun is just plain fun to shoot.
