Hello, I have to start by thanking all of you for replyinh and PM ing me info and maps, directions, etc it really helps a transplant out, things are much different in the east, almost hard to believe we are still in the same country moving here.

this is a long post and I ask for only honest and truthful answers, please.

I obviously did not do enough research before moving to MA, what I liked about Vermont I assumed was the same in MA, but with taxes much less (we compared taxes in north adams & williamstown to bennington and surrounding towns, pretty much half the taxes in MA--. So here we are...)

without a judgement attached can I run down what I have found out being here and see if I am understanding this all correctly and get some help from you all?

maybe I got bad info, or read the wrong info...

Vermont:
-no pistol permits needed, every resident and NON resident has the Right to Carry

-Sunday Hunting

-hounds allowed for everything except deer and moose

-Trout season closes in October, opens in Mid April

Massachusetts:

-it's up to my police chief to decide if I get a LTC or not and there are hoops and hundreds of dollars invovled if he bothers to call me back ever.Bash1

-No Sunday Hunting...I can fish, bowl, go skeet shooting, target shoot at a club, square dance or golf but not hunt...ok, did NOT see that coming...didn't even know to look for it! Smashhead

---trout season is open YEAR ROUND!! boy we win on that one!! I love that idea....love it!Fishing1

--hounds only allowed for rabbits, NO hunting during the Deer seasons except for Deer.

--Great people and neighbors, pretty scenery and the OCEAN is not far away! gotta love that!!

we've driven down every week so far we've lived here to rockport and essex, gloucester, newburyport, kittery, and lots to rockport, neat town..dry, but neat town..., that is kinda fantastic to be able to do in a day trip...really love that.

So other than not bothering to ship any handguns here and having to get this FFF permit?? and not being able to run my hounds, and not being able to hunt on sunday (retired so its not a issue for me like the poor guy who works mon-fri and maybe overtime on saturday!)

did I make the right call and pick MA over VT?

it's not too late we can slide over the border, we shop there now at Bilmont's, it's not much farther than 'town' and a nicer ride.

something about Vermont felt 'OFF' to us....

any help and info would be great, and hey let's not flame this ok?

if anyone wants to tell me something flame-like send me a PM, and then you don't have to hold back or pick your words, also feel free to give me the secret spots you won't post on the open forum!Thumbsup Thumbsup Thumbsup

Yikes Vermont WOULD BE MY CHOICE ,that is where I always go ,it's still a free country up there and us retired folks tend to be respected a lot . I live here but my heart is always at my mountan retreat in Vt. Real Vermonters are mostly nice folks but it takes a while for them to get comfortable with transplants, the folks who aren't so nice tend to be people who migrated north and think they own the state and the ( real ) Vermonters don't like them very much so they tend to wait and watch new folks to see if they measure up. If you don't they call and consider you a FLAT LANDER ,like a thorn in their way of life . Iv'e been welcone up there for over fifty five years so I aint no flat lander. As I said they respect their elders and the veterans and tend to let you live your life as you like, some places being more liberal than others. STAY AWAY FROM THE TOURIST TRAPS ALL THEY WANT IS TO TAKE YOUR MONEY AND TELL YOU HOW TO LIVE ON THEIR TERMS AND THE TAXES WILL KILL YOU.

Yeah the gun laws here suck pretty bad. But living in a small town you shouldn't have a problem getting a LTC unless your police chief is a hard ass. You may need to provide proof of having taken a pistol course to get a class A LTC. Stop into your local pd and talk to the chief and see if you can get a read on him and what he expects. Another nice thing about around here you can go striper fishing in the Ct River every spring.

If I wasn't born and raised here and if I didn't have family all around me, I would have left MA years ago. I've been a regular in the Bennington area for 20+ years, and I ain't no flat lander either. But my first choice now would be upstate NY, the absolute best freshwater fishing in the north east, deer up there are like squirrels around here,(in numbers and availability not size) Nice people, canada a stones throw away for your extra, extra curricular activities. The gun and hunting laws are better. MA sucks if you are an outdoorsman, don't get me wrong, you can make the most of it, it just takes a heck of a lot more work than it does in upstate NY.

Thanks for all the input, I have to say based on the people I have met here and on this site I think we have the right state, MA vs VT...

we keep saying that this whole area is like the calenders, the stone walls, the red barns, white churches with steeples...very pretty.

and yes, i got the 'flatlander' tag handed to me a few days ago, but by a 'baystater'.. LOL....I explained that the LOWEST point in our state, wyoming, is the HIGHEST point in this state, or very near that. the low point in wyoming is on the SD border on the belle fourche, pretty near 3300 feet above sea level..I think I read Mt Graylock is 3400? our high point Gannett Peak, is 13,800 give or take a couple feet.

am I the flatlander?

he said well, he still thought so. anyway I was still a transplant. RFLMAO...

he has me there!!

fella moved to wyoming and got his wyoming driver's license, told my friend an old rancher ,' now i'm a wyomingite' my buddy replied,, yepper, my cat had kittens in the oven last winter, that didn't make them biscuits. LOL.

All I know is I am learning to make maple syrup and trucking it back home...that is GOLD back there, its everywhere here! A truckload of syrup and a trailer load of lobster and I'm set for life.
