View Full Version : Something to think about

This is too true to be very funny
The next time you hear a politician use the
word 'billion' in a casual manner, think about
whether you want the 'politicians' spending
YOUR tax money.
A billion is a difficult number to comprehend,
but one advertising agency did a good job of
putting that figure into some perspective in
one of its releases.
A. A billion seconds ago it was 1959.
B A billion minutes ago Jesus was alive.
C. A billion hours ago our ancestors were
living in the Stone Age.
D. A billion days ago no-one walked on the earth on two feet.
E. A billion dollars ago was only 8 hours and
20 minutes, at the rate our government is spending it.
While this thought is still fresh in our brain, let's take a look at New Orleans It's amazing what you can learn with some simple division
Louisiana Senator, Mary Landrieu (D), is presently asking the Congress for $250 BILLION to rebuild New Orleans . Interesting number, what does it mean?
A. Well, if you are one of 484,674 residents of
New Orleans (every man, woman, child), you
each get $516,528.
B Or, if you have one of the 188,251 homes in
New Orleans , your home gets $1,329,787.
C. Or, if you are a family of four, your family
gets $2,066,012.
Washington , D.C . HELLO!!! ... Are all your calculators broken??

Tax his cash.
Tax him good and let him know
That after taxes, he has no dough.
If he hollers,
Tax him more,
Tax him until he's good and sore.
Tax his coffin,
Tax his grave,
Tax the sod in which he lays.
Put these words upon his tomb,
'Taxes drove me to my doom!'
And when he's gone,
We won't relax,
We'll still be after the inheritance TAX!!

and our nation was the most prosperous in the world.

Talked to my daughter this morning about this post; we had a very pointed discussion with the referance to re-building New Orleans. I would like to share her view (and mine) with you all....to put a first hand perspective on this horrific situation still remaining in the U.S.A:
"I wonder if whoever wrote this is actually naive enough to believe the money would be going directly to the families? I wonder if whoever wrote this actually has been to New Oreleans and has seen the utter devastation? Have they considered calculating paying for the resources (manual/physical, material and emotional) required to rebuild an entire community from scratch, not just individual homes; which is what YET needs to occur there! I wonder what price whoever wrote this would deem appropriate?" She goes on....
"While I generally agree with a lot of the coservative views <in this="" post="">, having been to New Orleans and having directly seen the complete physical and emotional destruction still present today and largely ignored, it sickens me to think that the perspective would be shock at the audacity of Sen. Landieu to request 250 billion dollars, rather than OUTRAGE that there remains an addition 250 billion dollars worth of damage yet to be addressed!"
Now my daughter has been raised and shares a great deal of my rather conservative viewpoints overall. That being said, I have to agree with her. This whole situation is - or should be - a total embarrassment to us all as Americans. Please, this is no disrespect on the post by CJ. Rather more of an affirmation of trying to get the correct perspective viewed.</in>

I have a question, it may not be a good question or I just may be ignorant, but a question nontheless. Why would we(Gov, tax payers) agree to spend 250 billion dollars to rebuild a "community" that is loacated below sea level and is on the sea(or in essence, under the sea)?
That is what I can't figure out. And, aren't you supposed to have, homeowners ins, we do up here. Also, why would you want to rebuild in a place that is prone to this type of natural disaster anyway?
Just some questions I have.

No. The american dollar is worthless because whenever the Govt needs more they just print more and more, which drives the value down more and more each time. Pure old supply and demand theory. The more of it there is the less it is worth.

Hey Joe you forgot Excise Tax. While I agree it is a shame to see the state New Orleans is in I don't think the Government should be spending that kind of money to bail them out. I think the Government should take all the Insurance companies that did buisness there and string them upside down and shake the money out of thier pockets.

A billion isn't really that much .....consider this:
Crazy Joe has made 1 billion posts to this site
Gary P caught 1 billion fish just last week
Crestliner has spent 1 billion hours just trying to put his motor on a new jackplate
When Crestliner still couldn't get the motor on he asked for help on here and got 1 billion different opinions
I think we should spend 250 billion to rebuild New Orleans, but then beer should be free for every taxpayer who goes there

As someone else posted previously, why should the rest of US (that's us not U.S.) foot the bill for people who choose to live in a place where it is unsafe? Should we then foot the bill everytime there is a forest fire that damages some homes in CA?
HELL NO! A lot of people lately seem to have a huge idea of "entitlement". Sure, you have the rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. That's the pursuit, which means YOU have to work for it, it doesn't mean living off the fat of others and getting handouts your entire life.
Here's what I'm outraged about...
Cost of home (http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/530917/theme/1349/home.html)lost (http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/530917/theme/1113/lost.html) in the floods: $25,000
Lost income and wages: $40,000
Getting a Quadrillion Dollars from the Government: Priceless
For all these things, you'd need about a million MasterCard's.
Michael Kunzelman of the Associated Press reports that after totaling the estimated 489,000 claims currently filed against the Federal Government over the failure of levees and flood walls following Hurricane Katrina, the proposed payout amount is estimated at $3,014,170,389,176,410.
247 other claims requested at least $1 billion and one creative (http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/530917/theme/1557/creative.html) soul is asking for $3 quadrillion.
Like I said, people just looking for handouts. These are probably the same people who were caught on tape looting, rioting, and shooting. And the execuses, its their right to get back at society. Entitletment at its best.
I'm glad I had a mom & dad that taught me the value of hard work, self reliance and what it meant to be proud of yourself and your personal values. These types of people have no social values whatsoever. They will continue to be an economical & social burden and just a plain waste of space.

What is your point Joe? You feel you need to find a way to dissagree with me now? I never mentioned anything about race. Try learning how to read before you imply I am racist.
New Orleans was and still is widly know as a Welfare haven. Over half of the residents (Just about all of the ones who would not leave before the storm) were/are government dependants. And guess whose houses were the majority of the ones that got wiped out? Not the rich folks on high ground.
The police force was known as being the most corropt in the nation. We even got video of the cops looting the stores after the storm. Yes there were a lot of good people down there but the ratios were severely skewed to the negative side.
The mayor was corrupt and completely useless during the aftermath as was the same story with the governer.
Let the whole steaming pile of crap sink into the sea so we don't have to pay to rebuild it again.

This is going to sound outrageous to a lot of you but what the heck. Personaly I think that as did happen the government should clean up the mess and repair the levies. Then i think it should be up to the home owners or should I say X-home owners to rebuild. If something like that should happen here I for one would not be sitting on my rear waiting for someone else to rebuild my home. I would expect to do it myself. I probably would go for a smaller home still becaus that would be all I could afford but what the heck. By the way did the pioneers wait for someone to rebuild when a disaster happened to them. I didn't think so. What the heck has happened to the american people. If they had insurance then they should expect to get a shere of money to rebuild but not from the government. Ok my thinking is squed but anytime you start depending on government to bail you out you are setting yourself up for a dissapointment. Oh and pond hopper I am not racist either, oh wait a minute maybe I am and didn't notice.

Just imagine an America with Obama or Billary as President ......."personal responsibility" would become "personally responsible for everyone"......I believe the government has acted responsibly in this situation: temporary housing has been provided, now it's time for the people to pull themselves up. Of course there are some exceptions, frail elderly, mentally challenged, seriously ill, etc......but if you're under 65, can stand up, have an IQ over 80.....you should be on your own !!!
