Two Men Arrested in Migratory Bird Death Violations
SUNDERLAND, MASSACHUSETTS (WWLP) - A disturbing discovery at a local trout hatchery has lead to the arrests of two local men. Federal agents allegedly discovered more than 250 Great Blue Heron carcasses, as well as carcasses of Ospreys and an Eagle, at the Mohawk Trout Hatchery in Sunderland. The criminal complaint alleged that the birds were killed by rifle shot. U.S. Attorney Michael Sullivan announced that 58-year-old Michael Zak Junior of Sunderland and 29-year-old Timothy Lloyd of Easthampton face charges of violating the Migratory Bird Treaty Act by killing migratory birds.

If you ran a childrens fishing derby would you use them again? Why not just cover the tanks with wire mesh or something, to shoot an Eagle is just wrong.

Any recommendations on other hatcheries?

A few years back the hatchery in Belchertown had to change the nets above the fish to a finer mesh - the ospreys were standing on the net and pulling fish up through it. These guys were breaking the law, probably saved themselves some $$ doing so, but now they'll probably get fined out of business.

Seems like the State of Massachusetts didn't wait to long to post these openings. Even though the pay is low its probably a good starting point for anyone interested in getting into a career with Mass Wildlife.

I'm guessing they may be taking it over? The fine is $15,000 for each violation, 250 blue herring a few Osprey's and so far 1 Bald Eagle, were talking close to 4 million in fines. Maybe this is Zachs way out of the mess? He does run a nice Facility, and has great fish. To bad he choose to shoot instead of finding a way to cover the pools!

I agree that Blue Herron are a pest. I had one wipe out my Koi pond in one day! I then purchase a net and covered it and haven't had a problem since.

Why he didn't cover his pools, Why he didn't bury the evidence??? And why he shot a Bald Eagle??? I talked with a EPO friend today, there may be more than one bald eagle, the one they found had not been shot to long ago, the others that may also be eagles are being tested!!!

The herron should have open season...agreed

I wonder how far back this investigation goes. I seem to remember something about them finding an eagle that had been shot in that area about a year ago. Wonder if they're related?
