There has been some question of wether fish caught in private lakes can be entered in the Derby. we need the mods who are supervisong the derby to make a decision.
On my part, unless all 57 members entered can fish a certain lake, i think it should be excluded from the derby.
it's up to you mods

seems to me the decision was already made.....there is nothing in the rules that make my fish not countable for the derby

The people running it will make the desion. As far as me getting worried that someone may bump me out of a catagory,I could care less. I'm not here to prove anything. It's just a fact that it does give and advantage to people who can fish a place that others can't. If you can't see the point ,you must have one on your head!

I do see your point clearly, but life really isnt always fair.. sometimes people have advantages. One must always overcome adversity. Everyone here seems in support of our great day on the water. An individual is not even required to write which body of water a caught fish came from, which would make enforcing this non-existant rule impossible anyway. Amend the rules and change it for next year if you must. But one shouldnt fabricate the letter of the law once the event has begun. Happy fishing and pray for some cold temps

Bigbear and I are deliberating about this situation. We want to make the right decision. Please be patient...our schedules conflict and we will be getting back to you all with a answer ASAP.

Rule Clarification!!!
Let me start out by saying that Bigbear and I personally feel that fishing from a private pond for this ice derby is not fair to all participants! With that said, we have finalized and already posted the rules regarding this years contest. Nowhere within those rules does it state that private ponds will be off limits for this contest. Therefore the private pond fish that are caught will be allowed according to the rules.
We understand both sides of the agrument here and hope that those apposed to private ponds can forgive us for the goof within our posting of the rules. Bigbear and I are very firm in once we setup rules that is final! All we can do is learn from this, and you can bet that it will be put to a vote before next years derby so keep an eye out.
Hope everyone has a Happy NewYear and lets see what those "public lakes/ponds" can produce.

Well done tacoma, that is exactly the right decision. Because it has already started you run it on the rules that have already been established and make further adjustments for future contests. Nice job. Beerchug

One question though? How do you know for sure where someone caught the fish? What is to stop them from showing backgrounds and saying they caught it anywhere once you do limit ponds to public waters? Not ciricizing but playing devils advocate. Wink1<!-- / message -->
We hope that people will play fair in all of our contests. If someone wants to cheat bad enough to win the "small" in comparison, prizes that we give out on this site...then good for them! We hold our contest to have some good old fun and its nice to see what other people are catching. Its one thing if we are giving away $1,000 but if someone wants to cheat bad enough to win a $10 gift card or a couple packs of senko worms...then let them have it. Lets keep it fair and impartial...and most of all, lets have fun!

Good discussion guys.....and Tacoma and Bigbear, good decision .....I can see both sides of the issue and it's a moot point this year because of the rules, but absolute fairness dictates that in the future the members should decide if private ponds are an advantage....I'm still waiting for ice down here, it was 66 degrees and sunny today

Good decision guys! I have a question thou, if next years derby is limited to public ponds only, shouldn't the big buck challenge be limited to public land only also? Someone mentioned this in another thread and it makes sense. I'm not busting anyone's nuts here, but what's good for the goose etc. Happy New Year!

I think you made the right call, given the fact that the rules were/are silent on the issue. I hope to get on the ice in Mass a few times this winter, otherwise I'll just "compete" unofficially from CT waters that I usually hit. I don't care at all about the prizes, its the friendly competition that appeals to me.

Why would you edit my post when tacoma has already quoted what you deleted out of my post? Wink1 Funny stuff!!!!
Steelie, although I am the one that brought that up before I think it would be highly diffecult to limit hunters to only public land as most probably hunt private land where as with fishing most fish public waters or at least waters accessable to most or all. My vote, if I had one, would be to include waters you can get permission on at least.
The best solution might be to take a poll sometime before next year's contest to get the general concensous of all the prospective participants.

The hunting question if a tougher one to answer. A lot of posted land is open if you ask. They just want to make sure there aren't a bunch of yahoos on there property. Deer are cautious no matter where you find them [only exception would be a game farm]. I think that getting permission for fishing private ponds which may have been stocked is another matter. In my opinion, it is a completely different ball game when the hunting challenge is taking place. Public or Private land...deer travel! The two deer I shot this year were about 5 miles from the field I know they lilke to feed in. When fishing...the fish are limited to the pond. In hunting, even though the land maybe private, its not unlikely that they may be shot on public land while they are out looking for does.
And don't worry, the ice fishing on private ponds issue, it will be brought to a vote before next years derby.
Happy and safe hunting and fishing to all!
