Before i alter my 12 ft row with casting decks and swivel seats should i get it inspected? i dont have a visabile data plate so i ive researched it and need a epo to come out and check on it and issue me a new hull identification #. just dont want him to give me less hp for what its rated stock you know. because i plan on fishing the big Q in the spring and can only bring 1/2 max on the water. any thoughts?

he won't rate your horsepower. what the EPO will do is inspect the hull for damage and floatability. besides, they'll never look at it again so you can make the mods after he's gone

Most 12' boats are rated 15 hp or less. I wouldn't put anything over a 7 1/2 on it if you want to stay Quabbin legal. You will probably have to get a new title for it before you can register it also. Check with the Marine Registry and they can give you the info you need.

I bud of mine just had this done.EPO came to his house looked the boat over then gave him a new VIN #. I don't think you need a title for a 12 foot boat.

I had to get a title and register my 17' canoe years ago when I put an electric motor on it. What a RIP-off. Then our ex-governor [who never raised taxes] doubles the registration fee. Hate being screwed. No longer put motor on canoe=$60 in my pocket; less stuff to carry; easier and faster getting on & off the water; stay in better physical shape; nothing to keep on a charger 12 months a year[although I still do Cry1 ], and catch just as many fish [unfortunately]. SO when the EP guy gave a sticker, did he do the HP rating and how would he know? Here's another idea. The scrap yards in Springfield are loaded with jon boats and aluminum boats, go there and cut one off!

I had a 14 ft deep v and it was rated for a 25 and I had an 18 on it. I brought it to quabbin multiple times and no one said anything. They ask for hp usually not max hp. but I would take gary's idea and get a tag for a 20 or 25 so you can put on a 10 horse.

Phil, haven't forgotten about you, just crazy busy with all the snow. My 12' has a max of 12hp and 350pds max weight, and the guy at the Q looks at it everytime. Iwould stick with a 6 hp or less for the Q unless you grab a tag off something like suggested. I'll take a pic of the tag when I take those other pics for u.Thumbsup
