View Full Version : Maanglers get together

OK I know this has been discussed before but the weather is nicer and it's staying light later. I know some people have gotten together from this site. It's time we all got together and found out who each other is. My vote is for a Friday or Saturday late afternoon into evening get together at a lake for some bass fishing or on the river for a night of cat fishing or whatever. We could bring a couple of small grills and have a quick dinner and "social hour" then get down to some fishing. If you want to do it at a lake I'd recommend Brimfield Reservoir. Good boat launch (2 areas) plenty of parking, decent bass fishing and plenty of places we could beach the boats to have a cook-out. Lets see if we can decide on a date (possibly 6/20/06) for this I can pretty much make any week end.

A get together is a great idea for meeting other members and is essential to the success of this site. I am up for what ever fishing type of event we plan. The minor problem for me is that this next month and a half is going to be incredibly busy for me with graduation, freshman orientation and a planned trip to Mt Washington.

Im all for a get together, but how about A-1 pond in westboro. Boat launch, pike and excellent bass fishing. also not far for us south eastern guys (about 1 hour) and prob. not bad a ride for the guys in West. mass.

The day is flexible or it could be more than a one time thing different days different locations. My son is planning to go back to Mt Washington this summer. He and a couple of his friends hiked it a coulpe years ago spending the night in one of the shelters. They plan on taking a different trail this time, he said they had a good time.

My uncle has reserved us a hut at Lakes of The Clouds. We are starting from Pickhem Notch and are going to climb to the top and then mayeb some of the other presidential ranges. I cant wait to go. The huts get booked up really early in the year. Ill make sure to take plenty of pictures to share with everyone on here.

That sounds like a good idea. I'm always up for a fishing get together. Wink1 The only thing we should look into is maybe applying for a permit for a tounament. That way we won't jump on anyone toes or at least lookup the date when one is picked to find out if there is a tournament going on at the location we pick.

I am in if I can make it. Don't have much of a boat but can either go with someone of bring it with me!

I forgot about the Shad derby being the next 2 weekends. That will probably tie up a lot of people. Do you think we would need a permit just to get together to do some fishing? It's not like were an organized club or association. Anyone else have a suggestion for a time or location?

fisher16
05-10-2006, 05:37 PM
If we get more than ten people I would. They are free I think Arlow posted some info concerning permits a while ago. If its under ten then probably not. How about June 10th??

noresman
05-10-2006, 06:49 PM
June 10th will work for me. Anyone else able to make this date? Now we need to agree on a location.

how about we do some surf fishing? all the guys that know how to do it will show the new guys and have a nice cookout on the beach.

The 10th is open for me so far, and I've never tried A-1 site, so that's my vote, but I'm open to most any suggestion.

Sounds like a nice place with ample parking for trailers/vehicles. I'll vote with the thread maker Noresman for this site.

I called the Army Corp of Engineers who control Brimfield Reservoir today and talked to Keith Beecher. He said if we were only going to have 4-5 boats it wouldn't be a problem. I told him we may have 12 to 15 boats (wishful thinking but it could happen) He said if there were going to be that many it would be a good idea to pull a permit to reserve that day so another tourney wouldn't get scheduled. At the moment the 10th of June is open. The fee for the day is $50.00. I know where the Field office is and am willing to make the arrangements and pull the permit. We can split the cost between us that day. If enough people are interested in doing this I will need to know soon so we don't loose the day. There is already a tourney scheduled the 11th. If we get 8-10 people thats 5 or 6 bucks each. Lets see what other members think and if the interest is there we'll do it.

I have a canoe and 22' pontoon boat in VT, pontoon has no trailer, canoe I could bring home. I would prefer not to fish from shore by myself all day. Does Brimfield has Tiger Musky???

fisher16
05-12-2006, 01:38 PM
Well it doesn't have to be itched in stone. It seems alot of people can't make June 10. I forgot about graduation ect, ect. Maybe we can discuss some other date's.

noresman
05-12-2006, 03:23 PM
Other dates or locations are fine by me. I figured I'd find out what the rules were for that body of water. In response to Fishstory no they do not have Tiger Musky but they do have Pike. As far as a canoe goes it would be fine on this body of water. Whatever date and place we agree on I will have at least 1 seat open in my boat. After all those parties Papi won't be in any shape for fishing unless we need some chumming of the waters.

Fishstory
05-12-2006, 04:28 PM
Noresman, I may have the wrong place, when you say Brimfield Reservior is it also called East Brimfield Reservoir??? Because East B R has Tiger Musky, a friend of mine caught a 18 pounder out of there, they were stocked in 1997, he caught his in 2002.

Brimfield Res. still sounds like a nice spot. I think we need a different date How about July 8th.

noresman
05-13-2006, 11:49 PM
July 8th sounds good to me. I will check next week to see if anything is scheduled for that day. If we get enough people to pull a permit I'm going to see if I can get them to throw in a couple of day passes to the Streeter Beach area in case anyone wants to bring the family for a day of swimming. To fishstory yes it is the same place and I wasn't aware they put the muskie in it. My daughter is the only one in the family to catch a legal pike there. She got a 36" through the ice about 10 years ago. Used to catch a bunch of 16" to 18" back in the 70's when they first started stocking them. Used to camp out there all the time with my dad in the 60's

I can make it on any saturday. I am sure I could drag jig n pig with me. We dont have a boat so if there are any open spots let us know. Could probably get a canoe or will fish on shore with someone if they dont have a boat either.

noresman
05-18-2006, 03:26 PM
I checked with the Army Corp of engineers and the 8th of July is open. So far it looks like we have 3 boats Fisher16,Toad,and myself. If anyone else is interested and will be bringing a boat please post soon. If we end up with 8 or more boats it would probably be a good idea to pull a permit ($50.00) so no other tourney gets scheduled that day. It is not required by the Corp to hold a function. If you've never fished this lake it's a pretty nice place. Decent launch area to accomadate any size boat, no horsepower limit, plenty of places you can pull your boat to shore and swim if you wish. The lake has decent bass fishing as well as pike and tiger muskie along with all the other pan fish. To power worm: I have a 12' row boat with an electric motor you and jig-n pig can use if I can figure out how to load it into the truck without it getting in the way of my trailer. Come on guys lets make this happen!

Power_Worm
05-18-2006, 05:17 PM

Looks like we've got 10 to 12 people and about 5 or 6 boats lined up at the moment. Do you people want to make this an all day affair or afternoon into the evening. Like I mentioned in earlier posts there are places we can beach the boats and set up a grill and swim or just relax and tell fishing lies... I mean stories to each other.

JayW
05-30-2006, 09:10 PM
You can count me in. I have a few friends that I will take also (they are members but dont post that much). I dont have a boat so if my friends come they have a nice 16ft boat or I will stay on shore and fish it really doesnt bother me. We should get a thread together for what we need and people can bring different types of food etc.

Can you have a Keg at the beach??? I did a moving job for Burke Beverage" Coorslight" and was givin 2 stainless steel coolers with 500 feet of coil for running a ice cold keg beer that im dying to try out. I could do a 1/4 barrel of Sams summer ale and a 1/4 of bud!!!!!!!!!!!! We could run the system out of the back of a SUV with no problem, then it wouldn't be so obvious!

Fishstory....I'm a little young cough cough lol jk. Im honestly really excited to meet everyone in person. It should be a good day. how about 1/4 barrel of Root beer? jp, but should be a good time.

Fishstory

1/4 barrel of root beer might be a little much for you! You better stick to a 6 pack of root beer, besides you don't need to drink, you actually catch fish!Tongue1 I do think we should all put in 5 bucks and biggest fish of the day wins the pot, or some challenge to make things interesting!

The beach area charges a fee for access. I know of 2 or 3 nice places along the shoreline where we could set up a "camp" area and get out of the sun for a while. If the weather is going to be iffy I have a large tarp I can bring. Does anyone need directions to the lake? If so I will post them as it gets closer.

fisher16
05-31-2006, 08:35 PM
Noresman is that time good, or do you want to schedule it earlier? Directions would be great never been there.

noresman
06-02-2006, 02:05 PM
Directions to Brimfield Reservoir: From the Mass pike take the Sturbridge exit to Rt 20 West. Follow Rt 20 about 3 miles to the traffic light where Rt 148 bears off to the right. Continue on Rt 20 west about 1/2 mile the boat launch will be on your right. If you see the lake you went past the launch. If your coming from the greater Springfield area and don't want to take the pike follow Rt 20 east through Palmer and Brimfield till you see the sign entering Sturbridge the lake will be on both sides of the road. The launch is the first left after the sign.

fisher16

Just thought I would offer a ride to anyone from the Westfield/West Springfield area. The only problem is space is limited. I can have five people in the vehicle. Maybe pick the Westfield Shops across from the new Home Depot as a meeting area if thats okay or Friendlys up by the Pike.

Coolers with food can either go in the back or in the boat plenty of leg room one seat is already taken so there's three left.

Does the Resevoir have a boat launch fee? Also are there any boat restrictions such as those at the Quabbin? Thanks

noresman
06-17-2006, 04:39 PM
No there is no fee or horsepower limit. Pretty much any size boat can be launched. I believe the web site says between the 2 launch areas you can park 36 trailers. Do the boat owners a favor do not park in the parking spots for trailers or below the gate at the launch. Yuo can park a car along the side of the access road.

There are 2 open ramps for launching boats at Brimfield Res. Coming from the Sturbridge exit off the Mass Pike heading west on Rt 20 the first ramp is about a 1/2 mile from the red light where Rt 148 meets Rt 20 on your right.( if you see the lake you missed the ramp) The second ramp is about 1/4 mile further down Rt 20 west on the left.(just past the sign that says entering Brimfield) They just re-opened this ramp a couple years ago. There is a culvert that goes under Rt 20 big enough and deep enough for all size boats so you can access both sides of the Reservoir. Still need to know if anyone has a decent sized grill?

They closed that ramp for years shortly after a woman drowned there. It was back in the late 60's. Her husband loaded the boat on the trailer and told her to pull the boat out of the water and she put the car in reverse by mistake. As far as the weather goes rain won't keep me from going. I carry rain gear in the boat all the time.

Due to the wife's illness I haven't been able to get out locally at all this year. Things are heading south for her right now and I just don't feel right spending anytime away from her.

I'll be posting the sale of my boat in the classified forum today or tomorrow because it really doesn't appear like there is going to be improvement for quite some time. I just can't see it sitting in the driveway, unused. I think that I only used it 1 or twice last year.

Anyway....hope the gathering is a real success. I promised to bring hot dogs, rolls and condiments so if someone would stop by my house before heading out there I would still like to donate.

If you catch and release and don't have a livewell you can have someone verify the weight of the fish for the "Lunker Pool".

So it looks like 10 def. + probably 1-3 friends of mine. Ok before I go out and purchase food how much should I buy because we already have people bringing similiar items. I can purchase 8 hamburg patties (or however many come packaged in the store) and buns and we have a ton of drinks at my house. If someone is already bringing hamburgs then I can bring other items. I would like to get a count or estimate on how much of each thing. I dont want to overpuchase nor do I want to be hungry :) .

its my fault, I see where we decided on the 8th. For some reason I thought it was a sunday and when my wife told me she would be gone for the day with my daughter I thought perfect day for get together. I now am questionable, I need to find a sitter for the entire day and a new friend with a boat, I told my buddy the 9th and he can't make the 8th...Go Ahead Bash1 Bash1 Bash1 Bash1 Bash1 Bash1 Bash1 Bash1

I just reviewed all the posts in this thread and it's always said the 8th of July. Don't know where people got the 9th from. I think it's too late to try and change the date because people have made plans. Just my opinion.

Fishstory, if jig n pig and power worm don't make it I will have a 12' boat with an elecrtic motor available. I will also have a seat in my boat 16' Tracker. If you make it, one way or another we will get you on the water somehow.

Noresman that I was thinking the samething. But more along the lines of this "Way way to late to change the plans for another day". I made sure my plate was clean for this day July 8th when we decided on the day.

Although alot of things have come up for me to do. I have already told people that I've committed to this event and plans, along with my brother. So I'll be there with the grill and extras that I said I was going to bring. I'll be leaving my house around 6:00 a.m.. I'll have to be off the water and packed in for around 2:30 3ish.

Fish I'll have a spot available if you need a ride on the water.

Thought I would Repost Norseman directions to the outing Saturday July 8th. For all that need them like me.

Yikes The last few years there have been some, "less than honest folks", from the cities that have found this is a great place to spend the day fishing, swimming, and picnicing.What1 If you guys are bringing a lot of gear it may be wise thing to have someone standing guard over your utensils and supplies. Bash1 Not trying to panic anyone but I had a friend that had some gear stolen last year, and guy I work with had some damage to his car while out kayaking there.Smashhead Just a word of caution.

If the wife is up for a ride I may swing by out there on Saturday.Tongue1 I won't be able to fish but I just would like to meet some of you and be able to associate a face with the posts.Yikes I also want to find out if we have any members that are uglier than CrazyJoe.Grinning1

Anyway hope to meet some of you on Saturday and if I don't get out there I'm hoping you all have a great time, and a fun get-together.Beerchug

I will be there early and establish a camp area for us. Personally I've never had anything stolen or damaged while fishing out there and I've been fishing the res since 1964. Used to camp there most weekend with my dad and leave the camp site unguarded all day while fishing, but times have changed. That is one of the reasons I mentioned setting up at a spot further down the shoreline away from the parking area. It seems like people are going to be arriving at different times from 6:00 am on. I'd suggest we all meet at the launch area at a certain time (7:00 am) so we know who is in our group and who isn't. Besides we've all got to throw our $5.00 in the pool for the biggest fish.

buckmanjr
07-06-2006, 05:47 PM

noresman
07-06-2006, 06:03 PM
The first launch area as you come in from the pike. The access road is on the right just past the Econo-lodge Motel.(about 3 miles west on Rt 20 from the Sturbridge exit off the Pike) It is the better of the 2 and has an open field area where we can set up.

Well it looks like were going to have plenty of food! Fishstory don't worry about getting in a boat we'll get you on the water somehow. If anyone has the motorola two way radios bring them that way we can stay in touch with each other on the water. I will be bringing two. To Toad I hope you and your wife can make it out tomorrow. If the two of you would like a ride around the lake let me know I'd be more than happy to have you on my boat.

Its looks like it gonna be a great day weather wise tomorrow. Hopefully this is the final head count of the get together, and directions. If I missed someone speak up please.

Directions to the lake: Coming from the Sturbridge exit off the Mass Pike heading west on Rt 20 the first ramp is about a 1/2 mile from the red light where Rt 148 meets Rt 20 on your right.( if you see the lake you missed the ramp) The second ramp is about 1/4 mile further down Rt 20 west on the left.(just past the sign that says entering Brimfield) They just re-opened this ramp a couple years ago. Noresman suggest that we meet at the boat launch around 7:00 a.m. or so for the early arrivals. I think I'll be leaving my house around 6:00 a.m. and should be there around 7:00 a.m. I have a black Liberty Jeep with a red/white 16.5 Fisher Boat on the Back.

Noresman I am looking for four of my Radio's. I have them but they are buried with my hunting equipment. If I find them I bring them along with me tomorrow. That way pretty much everyone will at at least one radio per vessel.

I scrapped the charcoal idea. between your grill and my stove we should be able to accomodate any cooking needs. The chilli is all made and ready to go, the boat and truck are loaded also. l have to go to a wake tonight for my brother-in-laws father who passed away on the fourth. I thought I was going to have to back out of the get together because the funeral is Saturday. But talking to the family they said "no way would Frankie want you to miss fishing because of him." Over the years I've had many enjoyable days fishing with him many of them at Brimfield, so I will dedicate my day of fishing and making new friends to him. I plan on being at the Res around 4:00 am. I will be driving a dark blue chevy silverado pick-up with a 16' Tracker boat.
