The only thing more secret than a fishing hole is a mushroom spot! My father says (bitterly) that all the guys from the old country go to their graves without telling anyone - not even their wives - about their mushroom spots. I'm sure he's not going to tell anyone either, although I do remember a few that he used to take me to when I was a kid.

He is a die-hard mushroom hunter, but he only goes after one kind, and I don't even know the English name for them. The Italian name (probably slang or a nickname) is signorina. They grow on old oak stumps in the fall, and to the untrained eye look just like a pile of oak leaves. He let my wife try some last year, and now she has a taste for them, so I just might have to go scouting them out myself this fall.

hunting with a friend once, the mushrooms he found were different than the ones I found, so we each tried the ones we found, he got his stomach pumped out and I laughed for 47 days straight Tongue1

Mushroom hunting can be a very dangerous thing to do if you are not that familiar with them. I personally just buy mine in a grocery store but suppose I would pick my own if I had a clue on which ones were safe and non poisonous.

Back before the Holyoke Mall was built I used to bird hunt all through that area. There was an old Polish guy used to hunt mushrooms there all the time. He would park at the Railroad tracks on Homestead Ave. and head back towards West Springfield in the woods with his basket picking some sort of mushrooms. Personally I don't like them enough to chance getting sick!

I love wild mushrooms and hunt often. I go mostly for fall 'shrooms like chickens ,hens, honeys, yellows, greys, etc.

Tuff to find morels in Ma. At least for me.

HELL YES !!!! I even hide my truck when I go picking because people know what I'm up to and will go in behind me and steal my spots!

Went for morels this weekend in Litchfield County CT and Berkshire County Ma. Moderate success, I think its still early, 8-10 hours in the woods yielded about 3 lbs....not much but it was beautiful out there. Next week should yield 20-30 lbs, and the following week more.

Sounds like we have a new mycologist on our hands Thumbsup .

The only mistakeable look-alike is the Umbrella Polypore and its is considered Choice by the Audubon Guide. I can tell the diference at 50 yards when I'm in the woods so it's not that tough, and you always have your dad to check them for you.

Probably the safest begginer mushroom is the "Chicken of the Woods" (Sulfer Shelf) that comes out about the same time (only a little sooner) and in the same habitat. I personally love their taste when breaded and fried. Pick up an Aduubon Guide at any decent book store and your on your way.

Kurt, got your PM. I'm already running late for my dart league and I want to make a comprehensive (sp?) response. We have a very similar 'shrooming background and I look foward to coresponding with you. I will respond as soon as I have a few minutes to write a coharent response.

Tight Lines and Happy Hunting

I've never done it due to not knowing the difference between the edible one and the poisionous one. Don't want to end up like fishstory friend. I've seen that procedure before and it doesn't look like something I want done to me. Glad to see that there is a variety of us who enjoy the outdoors in other ways than just fishing, hunting. I guess we have a couple of gathers amoungst us. Good stuff. Beerchug

If you can't go fishin' this weekend with all the rain we've been getting, there should be a bonanza of fungus among us to harvest. My lawn is full of ink caps.
