BPS is opening on Weds night next week in Foxboro, should be great! As I have said before, I believe BPS blows Cabellas away, here's a few differences.

Cabellas- no flyer sent to me prior to opening
BPS- got one with some pretty good deals. 48 pages long with some good looking gals!

C-give away a Ford truck after you give them your lifes info
BPS-giving some freebies to the first 500 cust each day.-

C- a couple of people I have never heard of as guests
BPS- Jimmy Houstan, Roland Martin,Miss Mass, a bunch of Patriots and Cheerleaders, Nascar guy Martin Truex, Left Kreh, Stacy king, Tim Horton, etc, etc.

BPS- Nextel, BPS race car on display
C-nothing

BPS-probably twice the size
C-bigger than most, but disapointing fishing section with no good deals on opening week.

BPS 2-3 times the fishing and boating stuff
Cabellas- small fishing section and even smaller boating section- don't even carry Merc boat oil??

I'll make it out there this week as I am on vacation and get some picts up for all to see. I still will stop in Cabellas when in CT, but it won't be a destination once BPS opens, that's for sure........

I have no basis for comparison GaryP. Eyeball Roller I have only been to the Cabellas in East Hartford. Didn't think it was any great shakes Sad1 ....just crowded Swear1 with no bargains Mad1 . Never been to a BassPro.Notsure

I know that I do like Bass Pro catalog Thumbsup better than Cabellas and it seems like there are better buys out of Bass Pro catalog.Grinning1

I know one thing for sure. I won't be heading out to Bass Pro for quite awhile. I get very uptight shopping anywhere when there are crowds of people. Yuck1 Smashhead Don't know what it is but I just reach a point where I have to vacate the premises when it's too crowded.

If Crazy Joe is going on Wednesday....that should thin out the crowds some. Yikes Laughing1 Laughing1 Laughing1 Laughing1 Laughing1

Thanks for comparison Gary. I haven't ever been to either, but BPS definitely does learn toward the fisherperson, whereas Cabelas is more hunter/camper type orientation. Do any of you know where Cabelas originated? If you are of my age/group, do you remember "Herter's, Inc."? Yep....Cabelas bought them out in the mid-70's. I still have one of the old Herter's catalogs somewhere up my attic. Bigger than a N.Y. City phone book! I use to have a custom .244 rifle, which I had them put together for me back in the 60's. Use to shoot tight at 300 yards. Herter's use to be an incredible outfitter. As far as BPS vs. Cabelas goes here, I'll wait until spring when things settle down a bit. Smile1

I cannot compare because I have only given my money to cabelas. I will definetly try them both out though!!! LOL

Crestliner - Here is a "Did You Know" factoid...

...before Abercrombie and Fitch was an extremely expensive clothing store for rich teens/adults that need to be spanked, it was a SportingGoods store. Kind of like a LLBean meets a hunting and fishing store. Now they just sell overpriced clothes to the snooty kind!

i've always been a big fan of cabelas, and i do admit that BPS has more fishing, but thats because of their roots. Cabelas was more primed for hunters in the dakotas (i think) while Jonny Morris is an avid fisherman that started out of his dads convenience store (?) with some fishing lures and local info

whats "ty gary" mean?

Dan, you are right, Cabellas has more hunting stuff which I gave up when I discovered that the best fishing is from Oct- March!- in open water!

tacoma - YES! I remember the old A & F quite well. Again, back in the '60s, when I was in boot camp, at the Great Lakes Naval Training Center, I visited the 12 story A & F in Chicago. You walk in and there was an enormous full mount of a bull african elephant in the lobby! And each floor was specifically dedicated to the sportsman. The one I remember most was the 6th. floor - totally dedicated to the "Double Gun". Shotguns & rifles. They had Purdeys, Lancasters, Bernardellis.....470 Nitro Express rifles....elaborate engraving. And back then, the lowest priced double I saw there was over $1200. - an incredible price tag back then! And they had hundreds of them in glass showcases surrounded by wildlife mounts. I probably spent every liberty there. The only thing I could ever afford to buy there was this small bottle of lemon cologne, which set me back quite a bit of $$ back in those days. Memories....:)

I just got in from the BPS in Foxboro and it doesn't even come close to comparison to the Cabelas in Hamburg PA that I visited last year. Just the outdoor bargain tent was the same size as the whole Foxboro BPS. The BPS fish tank is like a 10 gallon starter kit campared to Cabelas in PA. I was not impressed with the BPS at all.

A friend of mine went today and said it was unimpressive and very small. The selection of fishing was poor and he will not be going back. He was not impressed by Cabelas in EH, but said it is was nicer than Bass Pro..

oh yeah, gary, i never got a flyer from BPS, but i did get one from cabelas yesterday. i think it may be though because i just shop more from cabelas and very little from BPS online. who knows, i'm not their marketing strategist lol

wow, that's a bummer!

What he said!!! Agree1

I'm really surprised Notsure and somewhat disappointedCry1 . I guess it will still be worth a trip down just to see what it is like. Never been to one.

I'm not really into the high priced reels and rods anyway. Walmart Fishing1 sheite seems to do me just fine, and if I lose or break a reel or rod it's not big deal.

The fish doesn't have any idea how much you paid for the rod a reel. I think the only time high quality expensive reels are necessary is for heavy fishing for tuna, sails etc.

The selection wasn't bad, the tank was pretty small, but they did a nice job with everything else. The saltwater section seemed kind of small, but it was so crowded it was hard to tell. Picked up a 7' 6" Heavey BPS rod for pitching and flipping. They had some stuff i never even knew existed. Deff. worth the trip down in my opinion. PM me if your going, and we can meet up, i live right down the road.
