Quabbin has miles of shoreline open to fishing. Some areas are off limits but thats mostly on the southern end near the dam's. The ox-bow has some areas that are open to shore fishing. Be careful about fishing on Acadia Wild Life's land. They get real pissy. As far as the Ct River goes just about any place you can walk to the water you can fish.

Gonna head down there on saturday just curious on how to get there from south of boston. I imagine the pike will be involved but directions to any of the gates mentioned would be great.

Any specific lures kill fish on the quabbin. I mostly use soft baits but have a couple spinners and cranks. Any info would be great cause I would love to be able to post a couple pics of my first fish of 06.

It depends on what you want to fish for. I hear the smallies are hitting perch color Rapalas and various color Mepps spinners. The crank baits and spinner baits should be good for them. If you want to try for lakers bring a bucket of decent size shiners. If you want to troll for salmon try mooselok wobblers or big streamers.

If you are you getting off the pike in Palmer you can get shiners at Marriers. Call the day before to make sure someone will be there early. (413) 289-1348 They are usually open early but if they know you are coming they will make sure to be there. It is a couple of miles out of the way but better than going to belchertown. Get off the pike and go right onto rt 32. About a mile down the road at the light take a left. This is rt 20. Follow a couple of miles to the intersection of RT 67. At the intersection on the left is Merriers. Get your shiners and retrace your route back to and past the pike and follow 32 into ware center. Take a left at friendly's resteraunt on to North st. Follow north st to the end where it meets Greenwich rd. Take a right and gate 43 will be about 7 to 10 miles up the road on your left immediatly after a very sharp left hand corner.
Good luck!

There used to be a bait shop on Greenwich road from Ware to gate 43 but I think they closed years ago. Nearest bait I know is at R&R in Belchertown, at the intersection of rtes 9 & 202. If you're traveling from Springfield you should try Bob's Bait on East St. in Ludlow - top of the hill past the El Cid (and not to be confused with Uncle Bob's general store)

I will be out at 43 either the 14th or the 21st with my dad. Smallies should be heating up good by then.

Try some suspending jerkbaits ripped and paused. Also Rattle traps and crankbaits may work well. If the sun is out find some of the shallower flats. They will warm up faster and should hold fish as well as the two coves on the right as you leave the launching area.

The bait shop on rt 20 (mariners) is less than 5 minutes from the Palmer exit of the Pike. Take a right off the exit ramp - go to 1st red light - take a left and it's about 2 miles down on the left hand side of the road. Do yourself a favor and don't buy anything but bait or something that is sealed airtight. The place is pretty grungy but the bait is ok.

It is 17 miles and approx 30 minutes from the pike exit to the gate for 43. Marriers is the closest place your going to find for shiners when going to 43. If you were going to gate 8 R&R sports would be better but for 43 it will add 20 miles to your trip to go there instead of 5 to hit marriers.

While your there make shure you fish the pottapaug pond side. There is more shore line cover and your chances of a big bucket mouth are good.
