Im starting to get into hiking this year. Ive climbed a few mountains before in the past, but this year we are planning on climbing Mt Washington this summer. Should be a lot of fun. Ive only climbed a few mountains in the Western Mass area so this should be an entirely new ballgame. Anyone else into hiking and where have you gone?

If I'm not fishing and/or canoeing, I'm hiking. Been a lot of places, mostly in WMass though. My standard ones, because they're close, are various peaks of the Holyoke range, Mt. Toby & Sugarloaf on either side of the Conn. River to the north, and the Pelham hills near my house. Oh, and of course the Quabbin gates along Rte. 202, so you can hike AND fish. My biggest hike was a 10-mile day up to the top of Mt. Greylock - well worth it. I plan on hitting Monadnock this spring/summer, and also planning on heading to the White Mountains this year. Most recently, hiked among the giant redwoods at Muir Woods National Park north of San Francisco.

Since you're going to be at UMass next year, definitely climb Mt. Holyoke at Skinner State Park starting from the river end of the mountain, and do Mt. Norwottuck to the horse caves. And, best of all, you can never stop finding new stuff to explore at Quabbin, whether you're finding hidden trout streams or tracking moose!

hey Bpapi as far as hiking goes the m&m trail (metacomet monadnock) is great to learn on. i hike only in the spring and fall so the bugs are not bad. i usally go 12 miles on ocassion 14 miles it usally takes 6 hours for the 14mi. the trail starts in ct. and stops in new hampshire i just about compleated it. the trail is very well marked with a white rectangle for the blaze. it is best to take 2 cars so at the end of a section you can drive back to your car. there is alot of info on line just type in m&m trail.any questions about it or gear let me know happy trails
