I have run into a snag with my boat. I have a title for the boat, so registering that is no problem. The trailer that came with the boat has a VIN number that is no longer able to be read. The previous owner never had the trailer registered, because of some BS the RMV was putting him through, so he used a trailer plate from his other boat.

I called the RMV today and after 20 minutes of being on hold I wa able to speak with someone that could barley speak english, Notsure she told me I need to bring my boat to Westfield to have it inspected, I asked if I could get a temporary plate, I was told no, but she said put my trailer on a flat bed and bring it there, I said there is a 2500 pound boat on the trailer, she said well you have a problem and I can't help you, then hung up..MachineGun She never told me where in Westfield???? I called back and after 25 minutes on hold I was ready to go postal...MachineGun
So I have a boat and a trailer I have no clue how to get a vin number and local RMV don't take incoming calls....Question1

I was told by a friend that I could buy a old used junk trailer and take the VIN number from it and use that! Has anyone ever been in a similiar situation or have any ideas, or a junk trailer with a VIN number????

Thanks

I know where in Westfield you have to go. The State Police do the inspections ect. Its on Route 20 by the Westfield Shop, on Mainline Drive go into the Salvation Army Store Parking Lot and its on the rear side of the building. I'll be over there tomorrow AM I see if there is any Troopers around and get back to you. Or I'll asked a friend of mine about your situation and PM you the info.

that happend to me with an old trailer, what you do is just tell them it's home made, and they will issue you a new vin, i did need some kind of paper work showing i bought parts, like tires, steel, lights, that kind of stuff, went right though! got a new plate and vin.

Just have to love the governmental bureaucracies!! Sometimes it just sucks being a law abiding taxpaying citizen.

"No mans fortune or freedom is safe as long as a government legislature is in session".......Ben Franklin?

Wish I could help but haven't been through that before.

Fish went over to the place today no Troopers around. I'll try and find out a number/name of the place for you so you can call them. I believe they only hold hours on weekends. Thats the only time I've seen any activity there.

Fishstory....Similiar question thread on ctfisherman today, maybe it was you. Seems you just have to tell them it's homemade and they will give you a VIN number? Worth a try?

So I went to the RMV last night and asked my question in person, I was told get insurance for the trailer " attached to my auto policy" and bring that with a bill of sale and we will issue you a VIN#....I told them what I was told on the phone and he laughed and said don't worry about it, just bring in that info and you'll be all set......I still don't believe him, but I'm gonna try!!!

Agree1 You believe what the guy told you because that is how it works. The people on the phone were idiots, they always issue vin #s when one isn't available as long as you have a bill of sale ,insurance ,Ithink they even collect the sales tax and you are home free ThumbsupThumbsupThumbsup

Insurance? I have had a few boats over the years and never had the trailer insured. Is it required now? If so when did this start?

How much on average does it cost to insure a trailer?

you sure do have to have to have the trailer insured, it doesn't cost any extra, they ad it to the ins you already have, you can't get a trailer plate without it.Insurance? I have had a few boats over the years and never had the trailer insured. Is it required now? If so when did this start?

insurance on trailers is automatic covered under your auto policy but I would check with your agent first
