i think they are more day feeders because they eat more by sight. Who knows?

If you are going to give it a try, I would recommend some type of lighting in the water. They can be purchased at Bass pro, the lighting attracts the baitfish which attracks the trout. Or you can just get a boat lantern holder and attach it over the side above the water of course and let it do its magic. The only issue with it is it could be dangerous thats why I like using the submerisble lighting.

Try to find a copy of "Night Fishing For Trout" by Jim Basshline (Should be one 's' but I get a damned smiley icon if I spell that right...)

Lots of animals get more active in low light. (Think of evening deer hunts.) Fish get more active as the light fails, or even on cloudy/rainy days.

In late Spring/early summer the mayfly hatches switch from late morning-afternoon to dusk. Plus you get spinner falls in the evening, so a seemingly dead spot can turn on like crazy. I have a spot on the Deerfield that looks dead all day, but as it gets dark the place turns hot. I fish 'til I can't see and then hope I remembered my flashlight. Absolute bitch getting ouit in the dark, but worth it.

agree with Dana--tough fishing but worth it--I use dark patterns (read black with some flash)--if browns have been quiet dark wakes them up

Today at the swift, I didn't see any fish take anything from the surface, as soon as it started to get darker the trout were were taking something off the surface all over in the area. All over excect where my fly was.
I do have good hits at night, i've been out on the river until 10:00 pm last year, loving it. The one problem is knowing where the hell you casted, over tree limbs you forgot about, and tying on a new one.

Night fishing in streams for big browns is different kind of fishing. It's esp difficult unless you really know the stream. Wading in the dark with out a light . Be prepared to get wet. Guys I've fished with that did the best drifted dead shiners. I used flys . My best was a black muddler tied with a little wt. on a#4 4x long hook, fished across and down with a little movement. The end of May thru June is best. I,m too old for wading now but it was great fishing.
