View Full Version : Possible Angling Tournament
Once we get more members signed up here, we should host an angling tournament. Each person can pay $5 to enter and all money generated can go to charity. Any thoughts?
That sounds like a pretty good idea but I think the site would need to get some more members first. Keep me informed though if anything comes up as I'm always looking to fish in small tournaments.
I'm always willing to throw a few bucks away:p

You will have to check with the DEP about tournies and setting one up. I believe but dont quote me you need special permits?

anytime you have a tourney in Mass from a state ramp, you need a permit but if you go out of a Marina or private ramp like Brunelles or SPortsmans on the river, you do not. I believe if you have a T on Congamond you have to have both Mass and Ct

I am game. I just inherited a 14' Starcraft with a 9.9hp motor. Went out a bunch in Bartons Cove and up the river last summer. Trying to get into the Bass fishing stuff. Caught a few last year...nothing special but I am willing to spend a few bucks to have a good time with people who like fishing. Thats the best way to learn...from your elders!

technically if you're not paying out any money it's not a tournament. It's a fund raiser. i say if we do it lets just pick a lake and do it. basically its just a group of people getting together for a day of fishing it isn't an organized club. i think brimfield resivoir would be a good place to do hold it. when were done fishing have a cook-out

a bad day of fishing beats a good day at work
sounds good to me. More details can follow as the weather gets wamrer and spring nears.

They all sound like good idea's, and I would be game for one or more. But If they are going to be called a tournament we might want to look into the legal aspects of permits, and making it safe and enjoyable for everyone who attends.
a few folks getting to gether and going fishing?
If we want this site to grow...we should get to know each other.
Who needs a tournament.... lets go fishing....of course that applies if the wife doesn't want me to paint the kitchen!
Im def. up for that. I can bring a bunch of buddies of mine and we can all meet up. I agree for the site to grow we need to get to know each other.

I would be up for it, let me know the date, and type of species we are targeting. Would it be for boat fishing, or shore?

Any type of Tournament, derby, whatever you call it you are required to have a permit for. State ramp, private ramp it doesnt matter. We had a T out of brunells last year and had a permit. I am president of a local federation bass club and am very familiar with the need for permits.
One of the purposes is to make sure you dont have any conflicts with other tournaments. Most places can only handle so many boats. We usually have 20 boats for example. Permits keep the numbers down on any specific day by spreading out the large groups to different dates.
Many places like Brimfield Res have limited parking. We would be pissed if we had a permit for a tourney there and another group without the proper permit took up all the parking. Wouldnt you?
The last thing you want to do is give this place a bad name by cicumventing the rules and angering other Mass fishermen. Especially an organized group like the Mass Bass Federtion. Word would spread fast. You want these guys on your side and here as posters, not pissed off at you. This place will only grow through positive experiences.
Permits are free, all you need to do is apply to the proper sources. I will find out where for you guys and post it up here.

Nice post Rob. Like your Avatar, where could someone get the permit from? I looked up information concerning it on the Masswildlife website and didn't find any information conerning permits for tounaments. I am all about doing things legally, :) and making eveyone happy.

Here a a couple of links to get you started. I believe that Brimfield Res falls under the Army Corp of Engineers and you need to contact them about a permit as they are not on this list. Any way if you contact the people at the following links they should be able to help.
First link is lakes and rivers to apply for permits.
http://www.mass.gov/dfwele/pab/comramps.htm
Second link is lakes and dates already taken.

Good luck

I live in weymouth. I have not tried salt water fishing. I fish mostly in plymouth some ponds in pembroke. I went ice fishing a couple of time that was a fun time. I am kind of limited where I fish cause I dont have a boat but my gf has a canoe I can use.
