I've been signed up here for a long time, just never posted much.

I'm looking to get my LTC in Mass and had some questions I hope someone can help with.

Where can I find a LTC class?
Are there any classes coming up soon and how can I get signed up?
What are the differences between a LTC and FID?

Getting my hunting/sporting license is eventually the goal and with that I know I have to take a hunters safety course. They seem to fill up fast so does anyone know where I could find the hunter course as well?

I'm in Belchertown if that helps with locations. Thanks all.

Your best bet is for you to check the Chicopee Sportsman Club web page and look under training. I think they have a pistol course coming up on or about the 26th of July. You could also check with your Police Dept as I think they have an officer that runs cources. Good luck and welcome.

then main difference between an LTC and a FID are that and FID allows you to only posses low capacity long guns (shot guns and rifles.) with the FID you may not have a hand gun or a gun that can receive more than 6 shots. with the LTC you may have hand guns and long guns over 6 shots. and also you may carry a weapon on your person. also when you do get your hunter ed card dependeding on you towns laws and how well you know the chief of police the hunter ed training is some times suffient for both FID and LTC

if you call a hunter ed class that is filled up then can most likely squeze you in.

most of the time you do need to be a member of a club. but if you go down to smith& weson they have gun classes as well and if you were in the armed forces you don't need a class just a copy of you dd214. ur best bet is just to go for your ltc that covers just about every thing you will need.

Last i knew you could take one class that covered both hunter and gum safety. Most of the ones i seen are like 16 hours long weather its two 8 hour classes or eight 2 hour classes depends on whos putting on the class.

Mt son did his class at the 8 point sportsmans club in two 8 hour days on a weekend.
But most of the other classes were one night a weeek for 2 hours for 8 weeks.

Also last I knew there are three types of licences, Fid, Class A and Class B.
Fid is non large capacity for hunting and target shooting purposes only.
Class B is non large capacity licence to carry.
Class A is large capacity licence to carry.

The laws and rules seem to change on a daily basis and depending on who's reading it. their interpretation my not be the same as the next persons. very gray not so much black and white.

Good Luck and happy hunting and fishing

Signed up for the course at AAA guns in West Springfield. The hunting course can wait until I put the bike away for the winter.

You can take the course at 18 but you can't get a class A LTC till you're 21. You can get a basic permit for long guns and upgrade when you become 21. That's how my son did it.

I should have no problems with the age requirements, I'm 32.

not true. you may not have a shotgun over 5 rounds, and a rifle over 10 rounds. case in point, i own a remington 597 22 semi, with a detachable mag

detchable mags are allowed with an fid, and theoretically, you could own an AR 15 if you wanted, as long as the original manufacturer never made a magazine for it with over a 10 round capacity.

an exception to the over 10 round rule is tube fed .22s, which can sometimes have up to a 15 round capacity

Here's the rules right from web site.
That way there is no confusion. MachineGun MachineGun

Massachusetts Gun Licensing Requirements
Complying with the Gun Control Act of 1998
Effective June 1, 1998, all new firearm license applicants must complete a certified firearms safety course or Basic Hunter Education Course

The new law creates two types of licenses to carry (LTC):

CLASS “A" LTC: Permits the purchase, possession and carrying of all ammunition, handguns, rifles, shotguns and feeding devices (both large and non-large capacity). This is the only license that allows the carrying of concealed handguns-either loaded or unloaded.

CLASS “B" LTC: Permits the purchase, possession and carrying of all ammunition, non-large capacity handguns, and all rifles and shotguns (large and non-large capacity).

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Definition of Large Capacity Weapon
A weapon is large capacity if it is a semi-automatic handgun or rifle that is capable of accepting (or readily modifiable to accept) any detachable large capacity feeding device that holds more than ten rounds, OR if it is a shotgun capable of accepting more than five shotgun shells, OR if it is an assault weapon.

NOTE: A .22 caliber rifle with a fixed tubular magazine is not considered large capacity.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Class "A" and Class "B" License to Carry (LTC) Information
Your current LTC will be valid until its stated expiration date. New applicants must be 21 years of age or older to obtain a Class “A" or Class “B" permit. New applicants must complete a Mass. certified firearms safety course or a BASIC HUNTER EDUCATION COURSE. Class “A" and “B" LTC cost $100.00 and are valid for 6 years.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Firearms Identification (FID) Cards
The new FID card permits the purchase, possession and carrying of NON-LARGE CAPACITY RIFLES, SHOTGUNS and AMMUNITION ONLY. You must be at least 18 years old (or 15 - 17 years old with parental consent) to apply for an FID card. The fee for an FID card is $100.00 and it is valid for 6 years. New applicants must complete a Mass. approved firearms safety course or a BASIC HUNTER EDUCATION COURSE. A restricted FID card is available solely for the possession of mace or pepper spray. Applicants for the restricted FID are exempt from the education requirement.

Took the course on Sunday and had my meeting with Officer Oey yesterday. That's about as far in a police station as I would ever want to go. Now I begin the waiting period.
