Anyone have any information on trapping bait fish. I have been trying but so far only caught (3) newts and a snail Notsure . I have been using dry dog food as bait but that doesn't seem to work very well.
Thanks1

i've always used dry dog food...without sounding like a jerk, are you sure there are shiners in the pond you are trapping in??? I usually move it after a day if I don't get anything, because it usually only takes couple hours or so for the trap to be full...maybe trying some other places might improve your results.

I've only tried a few of the local Granby ponds so far. Like you mentioned I will try a different location. Do you have any recommendation on a good pond to start with. Thanks

Bread works good too. I caught some down the cape once.

Well, I'm having a tough time also. I throw the trapp in and I can see several minows imidiatly swimming around it. After 11 days I have caught 3 golden pond shiners and abou 6,000,000 4" bull head.
I throw a little bread ball in the water and twenty shiners come up and hit it. I started with dry dog food, then tried bread, then tried dog food in a nylon sock with perferations in it and then out of absoute fustration, two days ago ,threw a couple of leftover rubber biscuts in. Still nothing but Bull Head.
Any suggestions???

I've never tried this, but I'll tell yu what I've heard. When you put bread or dog food in the trap, it breaks down and little pieces of it get into the water around the trap. That's why the fish swarm around it, but don't go inside the trap. Some people use mint flavored chewing gum as the bait. Aparrently, the minnows like the smell and will go inside the trap to investigate. give it shot, let me know if it works, ok? Thanks.
