I got a good look at it, wish the picture was closer but that was as close as I was getting!! I did a little research and it has the markings and I would estimate it at between 4 and 5 feel long. Picture was taken at Buck pond in Westfield.

Hard to say, but from the pic i'd just say it was a large water snake. Some of them have similar markings to the cotton mouth, but the geographical range of the cottonmouth doesn't get much further northeast than Virginia.

Northern water snake, quite common. Sometimes they have some neat markings, other times just dark. No venomous snakes in Ma although there are rumors of a population of northern diamondback rattlesnakes in the Mt. Tom area.

Its not a roomer, or at least in the early 90's it wasn't. They are one of the reasons they got rid of the Alpine slide.

I could take you to a couple rattler dens on mt tom, and some on takoa mtn. in russell. there are 2 posionous snakes in Ma, the timber rattler and the copperhead. generally found in the same environment, i know for a fact both of em are on Mt. Tom

Thanks Ranger, I'd heard that from a couple people when I lived in Easthampton but have never spoken to anyone that had seen one in person.
I didn't know or think there were copperheads in MA. That's wild that there's a pit viper in Mass.

Puffer's Pond is loaded with snakes like that along the banks in the back. Mt. Tom def. has rattlers up there. I was hiking up there last year and came across about a 5' mutilated one up by the radio towers. Some idiots must have thought it was cool to kill it so they could take its rattler.
