Does this scene sound familiar; friday evening we watch the birds get stocked, saturday morning we go in there with dogs, we rustle up two birds, and find 7 more "birds" (a pile of feathers that the dogs point but it just wont flush).
For the first week or two, it often isn't bad, but it gets worse as the season goes on. One time last year, my friends and I found 10 piles of fresh feathers and one live bird in a morning in a place we saw 12 birds get released the night before. The coyotes come in after dark and clean the place out. I'm sure owls get there share, and i have seen hawks munching on carcases. Some weeks the predator take has to be at least 40% friday night. With that kind of casualty rate, there is no chance of getting a wild pheasant population. Post if there are predator problems where you hunt.

Nice post and I while hunting yesterday I was told that the Red Tail Hawks have pheasant on their taste buds as well. Today while out in that same field I counted around 8 Red Tails sitting or flying around the edges of the field looking for a quick meal.
Have seen to much Coyote predation but I am sure it occurs in this area.

What else would you expect? hawks, owls, weasels, fox and coyote all know where the pickings are easy woulden't be much different if I left my chickens off at the end of a field.

i've had hawks munching on robbins and morning doves in my yard. have seen coyotes near my house while walking around in the woods. cats, small dogs, and when was the last time you saw a coy-dog, coyotes are here.

I hunt up in Chester a lot and have seen where coyote's have chased down deer and killed them. Also piles of turkey feathers and bones. If I'm hunting and see a coyote chasing a deer I'll shoot the coyote first. Don't really care if I shoot a deer or not. Don't get me wrong if I have the oppurtunity I will shoot the deer but I enjoy the hunt and friendships I have formed over the years more.

Hawks are the main problem with stocked birds where I hunt. The problem is that these stock birds hold too long and don't fly strong, make an easy meal.

Talking to guy in Northern Vermont who rabbits hunts with beagles. Coyotes have gotten so brazen they've had to put in coon hounds in with the beagles to keep the coyotes off the dogs. Sounds a little fishy but I wouldn't be surprised.

i am sure the owls and hawks had there share cause i read somewhere that pheasants and owls are enimies. but hopfully the problem stops.
