View Full Version : Your prayers....Please
Most everyone on this site knows Crestliner. He was one hell of a contributer to the site and hopefully will be once again. The man is going through a very difficult time right now.
I believe in prayer. I also believe that with prayer....the more the better. For those of you that also believe please give a prayer for my good friend and fishing partner Rich Stienboch that his beloved wife, Jan, may recover.......quickly.
Below is an e-mail I received from Rich this morning.

Dear Rich,
Our prayers are with Jan. We remember some of the times we went to lunch with you both and always remember what a special person she is and we're sure you and the family all realize this. Please extend our best wishes for her healthy recovery. Take care of yourself now, because she needs you and the family around her. If there is anything we can do, please don't hesitate to call.

Keep the prayers going guys....they are working. Fran (Seabass) forwarded this e-mail from Cresty to me this afternoon:
Status on Jan. She was awoke this morning briefly. But because of swelling in her throat, she was sedated for another day before taking the tubes out. Looks like the worse may be behind us. It'll be a long road to recovery, but we are all very optimistic here. Can't wait for tomorrow morning!
This is a good thing.

I did speak to Rich today but I was driving and my mind was on my driving, so this will require a call from a land line to him. They are hoping and praying for a full and complete recovery for Jan. As of today she is in ICU and only family is allowed visitation. Keep the prayers going.

Thanks for the updates......
Just got an e-mail in from Crestythis morning. Keep the prayers coming guys. It would appear they are working. Thank you all.
This is what he said:
Hello Gary,
Yesterday was a great day! Jan had the tubes out of her
throat - for awhile - and she was able to interact with us, although on
a very basic level. She didn't have all her motor skills, but definitely
recognized us. She could answer questions with a nod of her head to
indicate a "yes" and "no". MAJOR! We were hopeful, but her vocal cords
are too swollen and not working, so it labored her breathing too much.
They were concerned that this would put too much strain on her heart.
So....they elected to put the tube back in and sedated her heavily once
again.
The good news is that she is "there", just waiting for us.
:-) They should be making the decision to trach her today. Then they
will be able to catherize her and find out what's going on with her
heart. So we have a lot to be thankful for. And speaking for not only
myself and all my family, we are very grateful for all your kind
thoughts and prayers. I think she will come back to us fully - but it's
going to be a slow and arduous journey over the next several months.
Thanks again for your support.

I talked to Rich today and he told me that he expects Jan to be in ICU for several more days. He seems to be holding his own as far as Jan is concerned. He has been having some trouble sleeping but says the family has been there for him and that they have been helping him out which he greatly appreciates, me too. She is having a procedure done tomorrow which I can not spell, but it hopefully will allow to talk again and then if I did not read to much into it, she will hopefully leave ICU and will be able to recieve visitors.
Thanks for the update fishinbuddy!

Haven't logged on in a while as I've been tied down with some things. However, I did read about Cresty and have kept his wife and family in my prayers. Glad to hear that things are beginning to improve with her. Also congratulations on the new addition to the family.
Hey guys...just got this in from Cresty. It appears the crisis is over and Jan should be fine in the future. Sitll a long road for the both of them but things are looking good. Thanks to all who sent prayers and well wishes thier way...they worked.
Hey folks,
Jan is doing GREAT! She is fully conscious at this point -
no longer on any drugs. She still cannot speak, but communicates
adequately with a small white board and dry erase markers. Tomorrow
(Tuesday), she will have a defibrillator implanted in her chest. This
should work to shock her heart into the correct rhythm, if she ever
suffers another catastrophic event.
They are also replacing the trache in her neck with a
smaller one which will have the ability to exercise her vocal cords and
begin the road to speaking once again. All good stuff! She has also
started physical therapy to get her walking again. Tomorrow it will be 3
weeks that she's been at Baystate! Time sure does fly by!
In another day or so, she will be transferred to Nobel
Hospital in Westfield, for her physical and mental therapy to begin.
They have a small 8 bed section - which is defined as an "accute
recovery" therapy ward. They will start to "re-teach" her how to dress,
wash, cook and walk - as well as talk! Not sure how long she will be
there, but at the rate she's been improving, it would appear that a
month or so there should just about do the trick. We'll just have to
wait and see. Right now, Jan is the "talk" of the 5th. floor at
Baystate! They've never seen a person, who has endured such a
catastrophic event, recover as quickly as she has. Truely a miracle!
He's a tough cookie alright! :-)
I think he meant She's

Great News
Got this from Cresty last night:
Hey Guys,
Thanks muchly for stopping by the other night! :-D Lots of fun and you two really helped out of the doldrums. It meant a lot - please know that.
Jan is progressing well. Her vocal cords are about 80% paralized, at this point, in the closed position (very unusual for heart attack victims). What this means is that closing off her trache with a cap, she can force air up through the cords to talk. However, it is much more difficult to force them apart for just regular breathing - and to this point, trying has been somewhat unsuccessful. This is why the trache is still in - and why it will be in when she comes home.
We are fairly confident that she will be coming home either this Friday or Monday! They can no longer help her in the rehab facility at Bronson. Her heart is under control with the defrib implant and her physical ability is increasing rapidly with each passing day. The only real road block to total recovery is her voice and the interference of the trache with her eating. She will still have the belly "peg" for feeding suppliments - for about 4 more weeks.
She has an appointment with the BEST throat surgeon in the northeast, on the 15th. of this month. Dr. Gregory Gallivan (also the opera singer) is a very renowned throat specialist/surgeon. Upon his evaluation, we'll have a better idea of where she stands for a complete recovery. Jan will have in-house nursing when she gets home; voice therapy, physical therapy and occupational therapy, over the next few weeks; until she is mostly self sufficient. Then she will become an "outpatient" patient; going to and from her follow up care appointments, outside the home.
The important thing is that all is under control and the care she has received, both at Baystate ICU and this Bronson Rehab center is nothing short of magnificent! They've helped me tremendously, with coping with this situation, as well helping with in-home care arrangements and follow up appointments with various doctors. If any one of you ever have the dubious honor of requiring care at either of these facilities, I assure you....you will be in very GOOD and capable hands.
Figured I'd give you an update as to what's going on in our lives. Doubtful that I'll be doing any more fishing this season - not something I even want to think about at this point. However, your concerns and queries as to both our well being is very greatly appreciated. God Bless.

Thanks for the update. Glad to hear she is progressing along in her recovery.
Looks like things are coming to a good closure for Cresty and Jan. Hopefully when things settle down a little more and they can get back to thier "normal" routine he will consider coming back and posting to the site once again. I hope so.
Just got this e-mail from him this afternoon.
I got Jan back home on Tuesday afternoon. She was a bit apprehensive;
being anxious about not having all the professional staff around when
needed, but we've both been trained quite well to take of her needs. We
have an RN visiting 3 times a week, along with an occupational and
physical therapist. Even a home help aide will be visiting a couple of
times a week to get her back into cooking and caring for herself. So
we've got plenty of help!
Had a doctors appointment yesterday and have 3 more this month, so it's
going to be a busy time for sure. We meet with the throat surgeon on the
30th. of this month. At this point, we should know of what possible
prognosis we should be able to expect, for her full recovery. We're
keeping our fingers crossed!
Jan is getting stronger and more independent with each passing day. God
has truly blessed our family. Hope you all are having a fine summer/fall
and getting in some fishing! Haven't been on the sites much, but I know
you guys have kept our friends informed there. I thank you that. Maybe
I'll be able to get caught up on some of the shenanigans going on those
sites by next week sometime. By then, our routine should be settling
down a bit. Thanks again for your thoughts and prayers.
