question about Horse power

a friend of mine picked up 2 outboards one is an 86 merc 65hp in really nice shape woth controls. the other is a unkown late 70's johnson that needs lower seals but the guy says they both run well. anyway he got them both for 100.00 it was a great deal, he wanted 150.00 each but at the end of the day he just wanted them gone. my question is how can i find out what size the johnson is, its quit a bit larger than the 65 but the guy said its a 50, is there anything on the motor that would tell me the hp, other than it saying it on the cover. any help would be great.

Check the serial # on the motor some times the HP will be in with those # first 2 or last 2 digits.

You can look up where the motor came from by the model number and serial number on the left hand side jsut below the latch for the cover.

get the seriel # and call Brunelles or the oxbow marina, then bolt it on a 12' jon boat!!!!!!!!!!
