Okay, if you hunt out of state, what rifle do you prefer? Mine's a Remington Model 7, had it since 1986. 18 inch barrel, makes it easy to carry and slip through the thick stuff. 7mm-08 caliber, with handloaded 120 grain Barnes X bullets. From a bench it'll put three shots in an inch.
I got my first rifle deer with this gun the first year I carried it. About twenty minutes into the opener in Vermont. Dropped him like a sack of potatos. Modest recoil -just a bit more than a .243 - and knocks 'em down. What's not to love?

Depends where I am hunting. I use a .35 Rem pump for the heavy cover or bear w/ red dot optical, stalking or normal conditions hunting in Maine I use a 30-06 Rem woodsmaster w/ peep sites and a 1-4 scope. For stands with long range shots that we hunt from time to tim in Northern Maine I use a .280 Rem bolt action w/ a 3-9 pwr scope. That being said, the only rifle I have fired at a deer is the woodsmaster, and she went down. Never got a buck out of MA though. We got a new tract of land in Maine this year and hopefully things will be better.
I haven't gotten to hunt out of state yet, but that hasn't stopped me from buying guns for it. Right now, my out of state hunting guns are:
Marlin 336 30-30 for deer and Winchester Mod 70 30-06 for whatever else I get to hunt, someday.

Wink1 Not overkill , just drop em where you hit em, no tracking needed. Makes for a shorter drag. Grinning1 Grinning1
