I got my first motor ever this summer and it was just tuned up and runs like a charm. However I have never winterized one before so I need some tips from some members. My buddies told me how they did theirs but would like some more advice. BTW Im putting the motor in my basement so it will be at a constant temperature. (I learned my lesson a few years ago when my dirtbike engine got messed up when the cyclinder head cracked as a result of the radiator getting a crack in it)

Pull the plugs, spray fog in there, put them back on!! I always put fuel stabilizer in my gas and ran it for a bit to keep the carbs from getting gummed up also!!!!

But if its being stored inside with heat, you don't have to worry about much at all...

what about a motor that will be outside all winter, this will be my fisrt winter with this boat/motor, what do shops get to winterized and shrinkwrap a bassboat? or should i do the motor myself? and just cover the boat with a tarp? sorry to hijack this thread....

According to my marina and numerous posts on other bulletin boards, a fuel stabilizer will not help your spring start-up. Better off draining off the fuel as best you can put it in the can for the snowblower! It's the damn "ethanol" in the gas these days that's creating lots of problems during winter storage. Better safe than sorry.

I agree run engine until out of fuel. then pull plugs and fog pistons. pull cord to turn engine over a few times then fog again. Now is the time to change gear oil in lower unit. If it is milkey looking then you have oil water getting by prop shaft seal. In the spring start engine with old plugs to burn off fogging oil and then change the plugs. It' just that simple. If you have a tank on your boat add stabilizer. And change fuel filter.
