might be a spring broken or it needs a good cleaning and lube. take the spool off and have a look underneath, not much to them.

Generally on the side of the bail where the roller is there will be a small screw.Under that screw should be the spring that is not working for some reason. If you're lucky, the arm at the end of the spring has come out of the retaining hole, and you just have to put it back in and you're set to go. If you're not that lucky, well.....Maybe a cleaning and lube will do the trick.

I've had more then a few people tell me to never use the handle to close the bail, not sure why, didn't bother asking. Don't know why they'd put that option on there if it isn't good for the reel... don't mean to hijack your thread. I always close it with my hand though, so if you can't fix it, I'll take it on the cheap.

Ryan, most people say to manually close the bail when using the new breeds of line(Like PowerPro). My understanding of the whole thing is that it is supposed to help inhibit the possibilities of the spool balling up and loops forming on the spool. Recently Buckman and Jr had this line put on their new reels and they told them to close the bail manually. I have been using PowerPro and other new breeds of line however and I haven't had any issues, as long as it's put on the reel correctly.

I thought that was a common thing to close the bail manually.Been doing it forever.
