View Full Version : Serious Carp Problem

Hi guys - I have a serious carp problem and could use some advice from fellow MAAnglers. I rent in Belmont and have a pond in my backyard that is loaded with carp. Between the pond and my apartment is a low area that fills with water during heavy rains (see below) and holds some water for a good part of the year. Unfortunately, during very heavy rains, like recently, the "puddle" and the main pond connect, making a "fish bridge." Normally it is half the size of below, and the pic is much lower than yesterday after the downpours.

This happened last year. Many (at least 100, probably many more) carp fill the puddle. I don't know why - maybe the puddle is loaded with breeding insects and the carp feed. The rain stops, warm weather arrives, and water begins to evaporate, trapping the carp. You have to see it to believe it - there are carp everywhere. Last year we were able to net some and free them, but there is only so much we can do. Walking near it there are carp half above water everywhere in the shallow grass, trying to get back to the pond. We contacted the landlords, who claim the property technically belongs to DCR and the Alewife Reservation. DCR claimed they know nothing about it and basically shrugged us off - they probably don't have the manpower to deal with it? Belmont Health Dept wouldn't help us. We contacted countless agencies, but no one would help. One guy did come out (I believe he was from DCR or MA Wildlife or maybe Belmont Animal Control - we contacted so many I can't remember), just to see it for himself, but it was unofficial, after he was out of work. The weather continues to warm, the carp cannot get out, lose oxygen, and begin to die. I need advice - any thoughts? I can't believe no one we contacted last year, particularly the owners of the apartment development, would do anything to help. The smell was horrid.

Now the same thing is happening again after the heavy rains. These are just a few pics I took about half an hour ago.

The situation must be a health hazard, plus all of these poor trapped fish are slowly suffocating. I don't have the equipment to catch them all, as the area is still large enough for them to escape my net into slightly deeper water that is so muddy you cannot see them. Any advice? Should I just keep harassing the landlord/DCR?

Thanks in advance, I appreciate any advice.

Dig a trench to drain the puddle back into the main body? Borrow a green truck to park nearby, and wear one of these

Don't have any easy answers but pupchow's idea would probably work. I would keep harassing the landlord along with all the other tenants. If he gets enough complaints he may be able to get some relief for you just to shut you up.(old squeaky wheel gets the grease)

I agree with digging the trench since NOBODY want to claim ownership. I would dig it as DEEP & WIDE as my back would allow!!

there is a carp master on this site named cory (cnc16sm) i bet he would catch them all and put them back in the pond for you. if not he should have some ideas atleast.

haha..sounds like it's time to buy a shovel - maybe when the complex owner sees a trench being dug on the property he'll do something about it

This happens a lot, it happened in great meadows this year too, hundreds of dead carp, maybe a few meateaters have already read this and they are on their way over there with nets, problem solved.

The trench idea is good tooThumbsup

exactly, just call a couple russians and they'll clean out the puddle and the main pond.

Carp wranglin rodeo, I like that...some of the neighbors were out with nets this weekend and managed to snag and free some carp - I threw some corn out on a line as a conservation effort but I got skunked...100 fish in a puddle and I can still manage not to catch anything haha Smashhead

I actually took a ride to check that out, did some breadball fishing and came up with bites but no takes. The water level was too high for me to walk completely through but I did find a shallow side to walk into. All the fish and turtles that live there were under the tree branch that lays on part of this puddle.

Maybe we will get an update on this place.

Hey guys. The problem actually resolved itself after a month or so, thanks to the wet summer we had. The small puddle/pond reconnected with the actual pond and the carp, for the most part, escaped. Bound to happen again next year, but at least it worked out this time. Thanks for all the helpThumbsup

I cant beleive no one is helping out. I do like the chain link fence idea. The back-hoe trench is a great remedy.

in hadley there is a pond that floods annually and the locals all get together and round up the fish in the fields with nets and kids run them back to the river!! just a suggestion
