Wow thats terrible.....I would have thought a Croc would have gotten him someday, but a sting ray.....I've done stingray city several times in Grand Cayman and never knew they could kill you! There were thousands swimming all around us and we were holding their tails and letting them pull us around....Yikes......maybe I won't do that anymore!!!

RIP Steve

He will always be remembered for his life long devotion to saving crocodiles. When crocodiles were endangered in the late 60's and 70's they helped to preserve this prehistoric creature. His way of how he did things and showed others around the globe especially children that some animals arent the bad sterotype that they are percieved to be. Im sure steve would have wanted to go out doing what he loves. Hes a great man and the world needs more people with the heart and courage of him. God Bless Steve

Overheard some folks talking about this while I was out and about this morning. One story had it that it was a freak accident, where He was jostled by his underwater cameraman and pushed into the ray unexpectedly, thereby placing the tail and barb near his chest and not at his outstretched hand.

Sounds plausible, and if true, would hate to be in the mind of that cameraman.

Regardless, a loss for anyone who loves wildlife in all it's vast forms.

The guy was kind of a nut but he did a lot for all kinds of wildlife and was great at educating people about their role in the grand scheme of things. I feel sorry for his wife and 2 little kids.

my last memory will be the time he was holding his baby in the pit when he was feeding a croc. actually he probally went alot easier then his show with the snakes and crocs. sad but. feel for his family especially the young ones.

Saw this at 5:00 a.m. this morning and at first I couldn't believe what I had just heard, and the same as the rest of the audience. Although he took alot of risks ect he was an expert in his field of choice. Sounds like a freak accident, and he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

I enjoyed his sense of personality personally, and watched he shows when they were aired on discovery, national geographic, or Jay Leno ect. He seemed like a great guy that was dedicated to his family and the outdoors. He will be sadely missed by his two sons and wife, and the rest of the people he had touched through his zoo that he had built and his shows.

he had a daughter and a son, the son is younger. sure was a surprise to hear the bad news....By-crikey, the world will be a duller place w/o him...

He was an expert in most fields of animals. I think i saw on the news he was filming something else when the stingray came up
