View Full Version : are there good secret places to get fish that aren't over fished
I am hoping to take my boat out more this year without having to deal with dirty, overfished and over populated fishing holes. i love to fish but having people out on lakes speedboating and doing other things scare the fish away and ruin it for others. i also like to fish where you can see right thru the water. it makes it fun and relaxing. i went to a few places in the past few years but the bass are to small. i am asking for help to enjoy the wonderful sport. if someone can also tell me about a good place to do fly fishing it would be most appriciated.
will meet all your needs as you have specified in your post....pristine, uncrowded, quiet and preety darn good fishing!:p

I am going to try fishing the Quabbin this year! I have a 14' Starcraft with a 9.9hp johnson. I think it is legal for the Quabbin? I think the closest gate I can get to is Gate #8. Is this a good spot for fishing?
is a great place for fishing.
Yes your boat would meet the regulations.
Back in the 70's, I was a recruiter for the Coast Guard. It was a very easy job with Vietnam going on we had large waiting lists. Suffice it to say I practically lived out at the Quabbin 4 or more days a week. I had the state record rainbow for one year, caught last day of the season in 1976. 6LB 10Z. Remember goijng to Boston to get the award. I have two fish mounted that came out of the "Q", the rainbow above, and a 5LB 4)Z Smallmouth.
The "Q" will make you pay your dues. Somdays you will kill them. Other days she will kill you. It's a big place that you have to learn by yoursellf or maybe hook up with someone who has fished there. I could pobably say the the good days come out even with the bad days.
Go there, you will not regret itl. Even if you don't catch any fish it is still an experience. Probably the most pristine place in Massachusetts.:)

Quabbin is a great place to fish. If your looking for Largemouth bass fish the other side of gate 43. I caught one of my pb largemouth from that side a couple of years ago. On a pumpkin seed color jig and pig in heavy cover. The open area around on Quabbin res side around 43 has some very good early spring time small mouth fishing. Some real quality smallies which will take a varity of artificials lures. Spring time small mouth fishing is excellant all spring throughout Quabbin.
Yes Quabbin is the place that you are looking for. Good Luck Tank

I don't think you can beat the Quabbin for a number of species. Especially smallmouth bass. Largemouth fishing is spotty, but the smallie is king there. And for the trouts, it's a fine place. Great white perch fishing as well, but you're going to have to do some work in finding them. Fish the main body humps and the "pass" for great smallmouth action. Good luck!

As far as the Quabbin goes and your 14 footer, remember this: Max. HP allowed on any vessel 12' & over is only 50% of the hull's RATED HP. They do check from time to time, so be aware.
