I took my wife's well maintained Subaru Forester in for its annual inspection. Everything passed but the license plate. Apparently it has lost its "reflectivity" Mad1 so now the vehicle is wearing a big R on the windshield Yikes. I hate failing vehicle inspections, removing license plates, and even worse going to the DMV Smashhead . I was told at the inspection station that I would get 2 "free" plates upon presentation of my now "failed" plate. At least the re-inspection will only cost me $5.00. Eyeball Roller

A re-inspection should be free as long as you repair the fault that was found.
Get 2 paltes free for only $5.00. Government double speak at it's finest!

That's what I thought too. JB, who is charging you the $5 fee?
How does that work with inspections in general? How much money goes to the shop and how much goes to the state? I've always wondered about that.Notsure

why not just skip inspection! my english teachers husbands on 3 years now Tongue1
60 days to re-inspect for free. Doesn't matter if it is a red rejection sticker (safety) or a black rejection sticker (emissions).
60 days to legally drive on a black R, and you are not supposed to drive a vehicle at all if you have a red R. The 3 days isn't true.
As for the FREE $5, just another way for them liberals to screw us Bash1.
Gotta love living in The People's Republic of Massachusetts...
The 3 days is true. My father got one in April. The $5 is for the gas station not the government. Nice try though! Kyle us liberals screw your mothers and girlfriends, we don't screw you.
Getting caught with an expired sticker I think is a moving violation. So not only do you pay the fine, but get tagged on your insurance for the next three years. True?

My sticker expired a few years ago lol the funny thing is i never went at all to even try to get it inspected. my parents got a rejection sticker and then got a letter from the registry that they were going to cancel there registration, if they didnt get it inspected again in 30 days!. Mean While i have had no problems re registering my car. i just did the other day. something doesnt seem right here lol. although i shouldnt be complaining lol
If you have a safety rejection sticker you cannot drive the vehicle at all. You can be pulled over and cited for 90-20, failure to have a vehicle inspection sticker. You can be towed no matter what if you are pulled over with a red sticker. If you only have a black sticker, it is also considered 90-20, but you can only expect to be towed if its something like tires, ball joints, windshield cracked, etc.
And yes, this is a moving violation, known as a surchargeable event.
Can be pulled over for a red R yes, but if it's within 72 hours you are fine. They won't ticket you. A black R isn't a 90-20 unless it's over 60 days. 90-20 is an invalid sticker. It's only invalid if it's after the given time frame. You'll get to that part of the book a little further into the school year. Eyeball Roller

Legally, but not likely the inspection place can make you tow the vehicle from the shop if you get a safety failure, its not safe for the road!

Remember to get a receipt for your old plate. They will tell you you don't need one, but you may end up with two exise bills for the same vehicle. To get an abatement you need the plate turn in. I have had a few cases of this happening already, with the state issuing two bills.
The Registry told one guy the police want two plates on the vehicle so they can check them easier in parking lots and on roadways and are using the reasoning of legibility to force the issue.

I said it to amuse myself. It worked. Also amused my wife when she read it. Two birds with one stone. Thumbsup

First of all, DON'T PANIC! It's not the end of the world! It is important to note that the purpose of our inspection program is to ensure public safety, which includes YOU. With nearly 5,000,000 registered vehicles in Massachusetts, common sense dictates that roadway safety requires safely operating vehicles. We hope we can count on your cooperation, and want you to know that we are here to help if you need it. We're just a phone call away. There are two categories of inspection failures: If the problem is a safety related issue (brakes, horn, tires, etc.) You must have the problem fixed immediately. You are not allowed to drive the vehicle or motorcycle until the safety issue(s) are resolved. Click the link if your vehicle fails and the problem is emissions related (http://www.mass.gov/vehiclecheck). If you failed for an emissions related problem, the inspector is required to provide you with an Emissions Failure Brochure. These brochures are available free of charge at all Official Massachusetts Inspection Stations (http://www.mass.gov/vehiclecheck).

Maybe it's because his was on a Friday? They told him 3 days. They meaning Salem Police. Send this to them.
whats worse than this $5 situation is the new law requiring any trailer with over 3000 gvw (combined trailer and cargo weight) to be inspected annually.. at a cost of a mere $129 Bash1
