Dog is man's best friend, but for one dog named Bear, that man - her owner - is probably her hero.
Like any other morning, Brian Delnegro took Bear to her dog house in his backyard. Moments later, he heard yelping and Brian came back outside to find a coyote attacking the one-and-a-half year old dog.
"I was more worried about the dog than I was myself," Delnegro said. "And the dog was more worried about me because she just sat there trying to bite it - holes in her leg, yelping."
That's when Brian tried to shoe the wild animal away with a heavy gardening rake. The coyote finally ran back into the woods, but returned later that evening. And this time, Brian was ready.
"I ran for my porch, across here, and took probably 30 feet away shot the thing right in the neck," he said. "It ran away, and we chased him, me and my younger brother, and we actually clubbed it when we got in the woods. Then we called the environmental police."
When they examined the coyote, they found it had rabies which presents a whole new set of risks - and for people who don't live anywhere near Hampden.
"Coyotes can range any where from 4 to 30 sqare miles," said John Flynn, Hampden Board of Health. "So, just because a rabid coyote was detected or found in one particular area, don't think that you can be half a mile away and be safe.
Brian says he would do it all over if it meant keeping his dog and family safe - but he's hoping he doesn't have to go through the same ordeal again.
"It was very trying to think that could happen right in your back yard, but I'm glad it's over with."

I don't care if a coyote has rabies or not...if I see it and I am armed, its going down! I am sure Yote has the same method!!! I hate them things!

We had the same problem around a year ago in my neighborhood. But instead of eating little doggies it was eating kitties. Took my neighbor cat, I wish I took some photo's of this Coyote. I now they usually weigh around forty pounds or so but this one was a healty one. I think it had around a half dozen cats before I finally caught up to it one night chased it out of the neighborhood, then the following night it met it match with a vehicle on Route 20.

For me to grab my gun and shoot one in my backyard would not be a good idea because I am surrounded by houses on all sides so I usually just resort to chasing them out with fireworks. But If I see them in the woods in my deer land the last sound they are gonna hear is boom.MachineGun

Fisher, is that pic of the mako jumping at the bottom of your posts the one you lost with Bill??? I've been meaning to ask you that!

As far as Yotes, I have alot behind my house, and have also been followed by 3 of them when walking with my daughter in the winter. Ever since then I carry my 9mm when I go for hikes, these coyotes are not afraid of people, these three came within 20 yards before Myself and my dog running at them convinced them to run, they were all in the 30 pound range and my pooch would probally been able to handle them, if she had to!

We havea a lot behind the house, all of them are beautiful animals, ones all black, another is all black with a blonde stripe down its back. I wanna see one in the deer stand! They are big coyotes to, bigger than 60 pounds all of them, i know that sounds big, but my dog weigh 80 pounds and most of them are the size of her.

60 lbs is huge...most coyotes I see and shoot are all around 30 to 40 and they are big! Don't forget...sometimes those heavy coats can be deceiving!

yea there certainly are some huge coyotes in our neck of the woods, i think the state record was shot the next town over and was over 70 lbs!!!But i don't think any around here are bigger than that. The gene pool in the coyotes here must have some recent interaction w/ domestic dogs because they are all huge....Jeff keep your mouth shut, we'll have half the state here trying to take advantage of our honey hole..lol as far as deer, they are all small, just spikes and little does
