Lets face it, this winter has sucked...Its cold, it snows every other day, we get taxed out the ass by our moron polititions, did I mention its cold for 6 months of the year and we basically sit around waiting for warm weather to come!
Well if your a ice fisherman then you get to enjoy getting up at 6am, put on a $300 thermal/waterproof outfit, 10-degrees outside! drive to a frozen lake and drag your crap in a plastic tub, drill a hole in a foot of ice and use a 20" POS rod, reel and line while using a freaking maggot on a light jig and maybe you'll get a sunfish or crappie..... For some reason thats not quite enough to keep me here forever, we have a limited season for salt water fishing, lets face it, its really only 5 months at best and only a few different types of fish...
Now lets take Florida in the winter: Put on a sweatshirt and shorts, jump on the boat and head out for tarpon, snook, cobia, reds, snappers, sharks, kingfish, jcuda, jewfish ect......All year round!!!!! Bikini's all year round!!!!!!!! WTF am I doing here, this flat out sucks, I hate winter, Cabin fever is making me go F#$#$$% NUTS!!!! I hate ICE......
I contacted a realitor in Florida today, I can get a sick place on the inner coastal, keep my boat in my back yard, heated pool with guest house that I can rent weekly, taxes are half of what I pay now for a 3 bedroom POS ranch, my wife can transfer to a local hospital down there with no problem, I sell my two other properties up here and live mortgage free down there, get my captains license and fish 365 days a year............Warm weather better get here soon, or I'll do something that I may enjoy for the rest of my lifeNotsure
Oh lets not forget for you freshwater bass guys, the Bass are much bigger than those little things up here, not to mention peacock bass and other cool species down there..
So what keeps everyone in Taxachusetts??????? Why do we waste 6 months of our lives freezing our azzes off waiting for warm weather???
I'm headed down in a few weeks and if I find the right place, I will have some things for sale!!!!!!Beerchug

Have a great trip. Some things about Massachusetts and southern New England in general that thrill me:
Smallmouth Bass
Albies
Proximity to Vermont and Maine
Red Sox
Patriots
Please don't move before we hit Montauk at least once!

Because if I move down there I'll be living in Florida!
I love it here, even thought the winters are long. I grew up in 6 different countries, have lived in Ohio, Indiana, Florida (Ft LAud.), Arizona, Tenn. and RI.
I now live where I want and thats Mass! My wife wants to move to the Cape and thats all right with me especially for fishing, lol These are my "people" up here- no disrespect- but it's true. Very different down there in quite a few ways.

The floridians consider the albie a garbage fish, they catch them all year round Beerchug
If I can make it to the warm weather I'll be ok, I'm only going through a cabin fever crisis right now Grinning1
I do enjoy the seasons and love VT, but I've been stuck in the house for to long now and need to fish, not through ice, on open water....I'll be ok in a day or two....Smashhead

One thing I like about New England is the history. I've thought about moving south before, but I think I would miss the change of scenery. As crummy as winter is, fall and spring are incredible. Also, the heat down there would kill me during the summer. One final thing I've noticed is that a lot of people who spend a fair amount of time in a warmer climate become total pussies with respect to the cold. I hate hearing people from Florida bitch about the cold when it's 50 degrees out.
That said, I totally understand the rationale behind your post Fishstory. I've been finding myself fantasizing about heading south over the last couple days. February is the hardest part though. Less than four more weeks and things will be looking up.

Get a job. Gives you a reason to leave the house. Grinning1

Florida basically sucks unless your young, single, an alcoholic, drug addict and like titty bars. Most of the hot girls are lesbians, by march it gets so humid that you can't function and the weather is only tolerable november through february. Your AC bill is triple your heating bill in mass. and when it's 85 degrees or more with a 70 dewpoint all the natives are ''comfortable '', if it gets below 75 degrees these wussies are freezing and need heat. The drought is so bad that you better forget freshwater fishing, most freshwater has dried up, oh and between may and september is 95 degrees every day with thunderstorms and 75 dewpoint. There is penty of work in FLA but only if your a waiter or in the service industry. I did not even mention Tampa area is the lightning capital of the world or the hurricane season. Sure the fishing can be good but 90 percent of all the saltwater you see is not going to hold fish. Water, water everywhere but can't find a damn fish.
My advice is to get a secondary home between november and march and keep your primary home the rest of the year.Thumbsup

Thats pretty funny, I was talking with someone today who used to go to Florida every year in march for 3 weeks, catch tons of fish and the weather was perfect, 80 degrees and no humidity. He and his wife loved it so much, they sold their home up here and moved down. I said to him, why are you back here?????
He says, go on vacation to Florida in July, you won't want to move down there!!!Grinning1 He basically told me what you said smoothdrag, but he left out hot lesbians and titty bars, so I'm willing to give it a tryLaughing1

I moved to California in the early 90's. It was a great move for me from a career standpoint, and it made me realize all the things I missed about New England. Some of the things that California was lacking were the change of seasons, inland waters to fish (far less common), sense of tradition, and people with similar values to mine.
I think living away from New England for awhile is a great way to come to realize what you really do value.
The Floridians hybernate in the summer in air-conditioning the same way we hybernate up here in the winter with heat on. They lose three months of enjoyable outside weather same as we lose up here.
Thing is up here you can dress for the cold and got outside in public. Down there there is a limit to what you can take off and still go in public.
Been down there 3 times in July and August...you literally can't move it's so hot. There was one time when I was in the Coast Guard. We pulled into San Juan, PR. I just cannot put into words what the combination of heat and humidity was like there in July. My body would literally seem like it was a faucet outside of the air conditioning.
I'll take New England.

Well I guess there are two true Floridians amoung us MAanglers which is me and my bro. Both of us were born in Ft. Lauderdale (Sunrise) if its still there last time we drove over our old home becuase it was a highway. :).
We lived in Florida (Vero Beach/Treasure Coast) for most of our younger lives every june to sept. For me Florida is a special place and still is, I visit unfortnately just a week or two at a time now these days. But I remember those long summer nights, sitting on the beach catching fish, drinking a few well lets leave it at that, and meeting some fine looking ladies :).
Happily married now, but the nights on the ocean sitting watching a full orange moon rise overhead are very very dear to my heart. Catching large red snapper, snook, sharks, missing some monster tarpon still break my heart after their famous jumps. The humidity never really bothered me, I guess I didn't think about it, or was just to busy enjoying my time. I plan on retiring sometime and when we (wife/I) do we have big plans. (BIG ASS BOAT, TONS OF FISHING EQUIP, and all day and night aboard the (Coughlinator) boats name that is.
We have recently thought about moving South ourselves, but the way this economy is, and two secure jobs. Its really hard to think of starting over again at the bottom of the barrel.
Todd if you go, be safe, enjoy, and prepare for those f'ing hurricanes. They are much worse than any winter storm I've seen in my life time.
