I'm interested in finding out more info on ocean kayaks designed for fishing! Ever since I saw those guys yesterday following the schools of fish, I've been thinking about how cool it would be to catch a big fish on one. Anyone ever try it? It appears you can go where big boats can't, maybe not as fast, but looks like fun, and these things are light, 50 lbs... Found these pics on the net, and also read where a guy caught a 12 foot thresher shark from his Kayak 2 miles out by himself...wow imagine!!!

I was recently up at a shop Wilderness Experiences in Southwick two weeks ago and purchased a roof rack which is just the beginning of things to come. The wife wants to buy a couple of kayaks soon.Thumbsup

I'm not complaining another boat would be nice to have especially on some of the lakes where there are motor restrictions. I looked at the sea kayak and for a brand new one I think it was around $800.00. I think they weighed a little more than fifity pounds but there are all types and models.

Thanks for the links, my interest has just tripled and I will be taking a ride to some shops today!

What I really like is the fact that you can go to a few of your favorite surf casting spots and drop the kayak in and get out to the rips, perfect example Cornfield point!!!

They are very cheap on gas Smoke1 You get exercise!!! and you don't need a boat launch, this will allow you less travel to the spots, by putting in closer to them.

Does quabbin allow these?

The only thing I'm wondering is what do you do if you get flipped over with all your gear? There must be a way to secure everything Notsure

here is a great site...

www.kayakfishingstuff.com (http://www.kayakfishingstuff.com)

I fish from a small kayak in lakes/pond/rivers...and its been the best investment I've made in fishing...my ONLY piece of advice is check into REI or EMS when they have a day at a local lake...you can test out the yaks, the different styles etc...

The only other thing, is no matter how hard you try your're gonna get wet so get used to it...splash and drip from the paddle is constant. Most flatwater kayaks are more stable than a canoe, and you can lean over pretty far without tipping.

Ive seen those on websites just devoted to ocean kayakers. Pretty cool stuff. I would buy them but it is a little to pricey for a kid my age and making only minimum wage it would take a while to pay off.

there is also a local group...they fish for stripers, and have a forum where you can ask questions...they are a good group of guys, and have a good FAQ section...i'll try and dig up the web address

you don't have to spend a lot of money to get a quality kayak in the water...craigslist has yaks for sale almost daily. I would say you could find a deal in the 250 dollar range, including the paddle...not knowing where you live, I have an old pddle i'd be willing to give away to get you started...it doesn't break down, and its got a light aluminum shaft...its a little on the heavy side, but I used it for 2 years before stepping up to the fibreglass...If you serious about it, you can PM. It will save you probably 50 bucks at the least.

Holy crap that killer whale just let that yakker have it. I would be more concerned with GW coming up and taking a look at the boat. Although the sightings are rare they are out there. I was watching the Discovery Channel shark week this past weekend and they showed two surfers together get attacked by two GW as one of them was catching a wave. The surfer recieved minor wounds but the minor wounds were the lost of fingers and couple of hundred stitches. Wouldn't want to be on the recieving end of their taste buds.

I ahve gobe ouit of a kayak at the mouth of the benjamin river and had a blast. Just a basic one but i have seen ones decked out with rod holders fishfinders. plus the average joe paddles at about the right speed for trolling.
