where your motor sits, does the propeller sit high in the water? you' ll need a long shaft. on a 12', a short should work, but if theres a chance you up size in boat, say to a 16', will that short shaft be deep enough to work a 16' properly. i'm talking a 20 hp or lower, i don't know if they make short shafts for larger engines, they might. either would work for a 12' aluminum in my opinion, but i would go with a long. easier to sell a long shaft. just my opinion

Another thing to consider is where you fish. If you fish a lot of smaller shallow ponds or rivers I would recommend a short shaft motor. Less chance of busting a prop or worse.

I would think about boat size. A 12 footer runs out of room in a hurry with two guys and gear.14 or 16 would be better if your going to trailer it
